But with Ashes/Axis, the band’s forthcoming new full-length record, listeners are less likely to hear echoes of the academy. All sorts of heady compositional devices, both musical and literary, are still present, but the members of Cuddle Magic have learned to bury those influences deeper in the substrate of the music.

Ashes/Axis features songs written by three of Cuddle Magic’s band members–Christopher McDonald, Benjamin Lazar Davis and Alec Spiegelman–all of whom take turns as lead vocalist. In addition, Kristin Slipp, whose voice is prominent from the very start of the album, takes the lead on “Slow Rider,” “The First Hippie on the Moon, Pt. II” and “Voicemail.”

The album also features several co-writes: “The First Hippie on the Moon, Pt. I” was co-written by McDonald and Davis; “Voicemail” was co-written by Lazar Davis and Spiegelman; “Spinning” and “Round And Round” were co-written by Lazar Davis and Sarah K. Pedinotti of Lip Talk, and three of the songs on the album were co-written by Lazar Davis and longtime collaborator Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive. Those tracks, “Slow Rider,” “Trojan Horse,” and “Getaway,” are all pop songs hung over the frame of Bawa music from Northwestern Ghana. Parts of these songs were conceived just for the gyl, a type of wooden xylophone, and can be heard translated for this sort-of-rock band.

As with past Cuddle Magic records, the studio process for Ashes/Axis began with live full-band arrangements. Grooves were orchestrated with a set of unusual electro-acoustic timbres including a finger-picked, overdriven acoustic guitar, a bass clarinet with a cheap microphone nested in the bell, junk-shop percussion run through a vocoder, and a slew of Casio keyboards (bought, urgently, from an unnervingly tense family in rural Maine). After tracking the arrangements, several elements were then removed to allow for one final stage of recomposition. With Cuddle Magic’s Benjamin Lazar Davis at the helm, Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Swans, Antony & The Johnsons) and assistant engineer Adam Sachs chopped, distorted, distressed, and delayed elements in each song. The end result is a sound that is warm and precise, raw yet sophisticated–a set of infectious pop songs from either an alternate reality or a paradoxically familiar near-future.

Opposites by Parlor Walls
Parlor Walls’ debut album Opposites is appropriately named. The trio of Alyse Lamb (guitar, vocals), Kate Mohanty (saxophone), and Chris Mulligan (drums, synth) channel a sound that plays with extremes. At times heavy and playful, vulnerable and strong, dark and humorous, exacting and unhinged, it recalls the everyday taming we all do to harness our wild parts, and invites us to let them be. The band explores how far they can push the listener in one direction, while still holding the opposite qualities intact. How much dissonance and melody can exist at once? Can a rhythm be fun yet challenging?

From the opening track “Crime Engine Failure”, we get the unsettling feeling of gears churning. A relentless drumbeat refuses to evolve as the vocals begin the song in an all-together different timing. This push and pull is where the band thrives. Unsure where the anchor is, they perform a balancing act. Second track “Cover Me” whips in like a charging bull and settles on a groove-laden bass, only to dive into chaos with Mohanty’s box-cutter tone and Lamb’s pleading, urgent vocals. In “Play Opposites”, she begs the question, “Is this what you wanted Mother? Empty shells to fill your hole?”, as the music slowly unravels into a wash of noise. On songs “Love Again” and “Hesitation”, the trio walks the fine line between pure pleasure and madness, encouraging you to thrive in between the two.

It would be best to listen to Opposites in a giant cavern around a fire surrounded by your tribe for one last dance before you head out to fight the revolution. The band’s second album for Northern Spy establishes the Brooklyn sextet as purveyors of googley-eyed psych-pop of the highest order, delivered in a kinetically singular dialect of the musical language of fun. Over eight tracks, Cloud Becomes Your Hand affirm their position in the secret lineage that links the pingings of the BBC Radiophonics Workshop to the happy goofing of Syd-era Pink Floyd (like if the busted gearwork at the end of “Bike” started its own band?), a line that connects the energy dome power of Devo to the collage-happy Frosted Ambassador wing of the Elephant 6 Recording Company. Another origin are Cooper’s subsequent home recording endeavors released on cassette under the Cloud Becomes moniker, including Cloud Becomes Your Hand (2010) and Doggy Paddle (2011) before drafting an ensemble into service for live work. “Like punk rock coming out of a music box,” Stereogum described one such performance. “A joyful journey through a strange land,” said the New Yorker. Lou had died late October. I found out 10 minutes before I had to play solo before a sold out crowd at the Hammersmith Apollo in London. Needless to say, his passing had a massive effect on me. He was my childhood hero. Europe was hard to grasp for me in a lot of ways. The culture, language barriers,the overload of dairy and ghettos of freshly placed refugees from countries, some I had never heard of before. I was exhausted and getting drunk outside a bar where you can get Marsala for a Euro, basically all I could afford. There were tons of kids dancing in the streets getting high and happy, when this stray yellow lab walked up to me and starts swaying back and forth. The song Make Up came blaring through the stereo and I started swaying with the dog. It was one of those rare moments I felt alright.

Shilpa’s thoughts on “What A Diff’rence A Day Makes” (written By María Grever with English lyrics written by Stanley Adams)

We had decided to go to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame during a tour stop in Cleveland. It was a stressful situation and trying to justify my actions in the passive aggressive world of music where no one’s making any money felt daunting. I separated myself from the group, the costumes, the Katy Perry and the Beyonce and hung out in the listening booth for hours. Dinah Washington came on and put every wannabe singer, myself included, to shame. What a voice! She draws her breath so long and never loses the listener. I had to challenge myself with this one. Finally we got it right – meaning, we got it to sound wrong exactly like us.If you listen closely, you can hear the rage, hope, disappointment, ritual excess, love and anarchy that were in our personal and collective airspace during those years. There were (and – we hope – will continue to be) several kinds of riots going on (“Lies My Body Told Me,” “Bread and Roses”). And yes, the CD is “political,” (see “Avanti Popolo,” “Ain’t Gonna Let Them Turn Me ‘Round”). But what fun is raging against the machine if you can’t also rage against the bar line and the tonal system (“Take Five,” “Ritual Slaughter” “Your Turn”)? The astute listener will note our wry comment on the contradictions of producing a recording during the collapse of the industry which once paid for recordings to be produced (“We Are the Professionals,” “Masters of the Internet” and the attached manifesto). The very astute listener with really expensive headphones may hear the water pipes in the basement on Rivington and Allen where we recorded about half the tracks (the guitar amp isolation booth looked a lot like a bathroom). And there was a good chance that at the far end of the floor bowing under the weight of bodies, the sons of Uterus and Fire, Old Time Relijun, were in charismatic glory. Their first recorded output, Songbook Vol. I, long out of print, is brought to revival by Brooklyn’s newest indie imprint, Northern Spy Records. Over the course of 7 albums, frontman Arrington de Dionyso (Malaikat Dan Singa) and upright bassist Aaron Hartman (Girls In Trouble) have established an indie rock avant-garde with elements of the naive, the spiritual, international folk sounds and shake your ass funkiness. As one half of Matmos and an increasingly active figure in free music circles, Schmidt is known for his taste in outré sound sources, and a combination of puckish humor and serious production chops. With his last album “Batu Malablab”, the prepared piano was the anchoring instrument and a mood of faux exotica prevailed. This new album, in which each side consists of a single long-form assemblage finds him stitching together improvised source material harvested from a striking array of guest stars: Jason Willett of Half Japanese, Max Eilbacher of Horse Lords, jazz bassist Lisle Ellis and Tomoko Sauvage on ceramics and hydrophones. Neither “drone” nor “noise,” the dream logic of Schmidt’s slippery and singular aesthetic stays on the tip of your tongue.

At once relay race and rebus, the album keeps cresting and dissolving as layers of acoustic and electronic materials merge and separate. The palette is electroacoustic: we think we hear flute, bells and strings, but can never be sure what is a processed acoustic instrument and what is a cleverly detourned software emulation. Laser stabs and zaps from modular synthesizers are gradually supported by a purring sound that, upon closer inspection, just might be the artist making a “raspberry” blurt with his lips Surf-like white noise gives way to a delicate duet between Schmidt on percussion and Tomoko Sauvage, whose distinctive aquatic palette liquefies and seethes. After a tumultuous and alien beginning, side one gearshifts into the pastoral work of Alvin Curran circa his “Magnetic Garden” period and comes out the other side into burnt digital sine waves. Side two begins with a shivering, insectile manipulation of a text spoken by the poet Brandon Som, with Schmidt’s software manhandling fragments of speech into warped textural particles on the threshold of meaning. When Som is finally intelligible, the “reveal” is startling, and brief, as this speech synthesis study gives way to a febrile, seasick melodic minimalism that may appeal to fans of John Bender or Three Legged Race. After some crisp musique-concrete origami fashioned from close-mic-ed recordings of paper and writing, the side concludes with a charmingly unexpected endless staircase vamp for electric piano in which Schmidt’s keyboard chops are set in joyous motion on a kind of lysergic George Duke solo above a re-purposed halfbar loop of prepared piano cannily sliced from Schmidt’s previous album. A cleansing field recording of rainfall brings this side-long suite to a close. At once inevitable and uncanny in its how-did-I-get-here payoff, it makes an apt conclusion to a confounding new work from a boldly independent figure on the American electronic underground.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0677/9256/8543/files/Martin-solo-SQUARE-1400-1-e1646850194879.jpg?v=1703789593
spinningcreature
Spinning Creature - CUP

Spinning Creature by CUP

CUP is the duo of Nels Cline (the guitarist/composer best known for his work with Wilco) and Yuka C Honda (the composer/keyboardist/programmer best known for her work with Cibo Matto). In the last several years, Nels and Yuka had performed some of the songs included on this record, while always leaving room for improvisation in their sets as well. This recording was approached with those same parameters. Thus, one hears songs with lyrics and some semblance of song structure as well as pieces that were created spontaneously. A significant bonus factor in the recording process is that Yuka could take tracks to her home studio and give them the "Eucademix" treatment, meaning to sculpt details of the tracks, adding her often meticulous sound production while still honoring the live performance aspects. This balance is what CUP music is all about. Nels and Yuka (who are married, by the way) even sing a little here and there as they enter their singular sound world. He spent that time trying to help them, and in the last two years of their life, he connected with them more deeply than he ever had. “Muerto” and “FKA Bluets” are more directly about the experience, whereas “What is Your Deal,” “Cockroach,” and “Hey Dude Etude” are more existentially inspired by the time. The person who this is about was complicated but loved by all. “Hey Dude Etude” is a brief, distorted, and existential self-portrait written as spoken word dialogue over music. “What is Your Deal” is a playful jam about lost connection and suicidal ideation—party time!

Throughout this EP Tōth plays with the contrast between dark and light—sadness with a sense of humor and upbeat music. There is no question that life is difficult, even brutal at times, and Tōth believes it’s helpful to meet that with an acceptance and a lightness even. Recounting a story told to him by a Buddhist monk about Carlos Castaneda, Tōth says, Castaneda was approached by a student for spiritual advice thinking he would tell them about which peyote to take in which desert and with which shaman but instead, Castaneda gave them this advice: “The most spiritually transformative thing you can do is, when you wake up, remember how you and everyone you encounter today is going to die, not in a morbid way, but just in an appreciative acknowledgment.”

Charismatic Mutations by PSYMON SPINE
Psymon Spine’s latest album Charismatic Megafauna explored complicated feelings and catharsis through a singular approach to left-of-center indie, electronic and dance sounds. Known for his roles on Kroll Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Bob’s Burgers, and Big Mouth, the actor gone musician casts the net wide, cycling through a new genre with nearly every song, incorporating new wave, country, electro, Irish folk, lo-fi guitar pop, ska, and classic rock. The album picks up where Daly’s previous singles, including the internet-breaking Red Hot Chili Peppers spoof “Abracadabralifornia” and Lil Xan diss track “I’m Your Dad” left off, landing somewhere between pure silliness and pop sublimity.

Drawing from Daly’s wealth of musical influence, which includes Roxy Music, the Johnny Cash/Kris Kristofferson/Willie Nelson/Waylon Jennings supergroup The Highwaymen, Devo, Islands, Man Man, King Tubby, the Chieftains, Rancid, and Jlin. The songs came together quickly, with Daly often suggesting little more than a title and a genre before Ghahremani was busy generating any number of styles, from the Celtic folk of “Whistle Stop Johnny” to the vintage electronics sampling “Addicted to Computers,” which is built on recordings of sounds made by outdated tech. Elsewhere, Daly explores (relatively) straightforward historical narratives (“Helen Keller”) and pens an ode to the 2017 psychological thriller The Snowman. Daly evokes the classic mode of Weird “Al” Yankovic on the Stones parody “Cheer Me Up” and provides a solemn country ballad response to DJ Khaled’s 2018 comments about cunnilingus on “Eatin’ Pussy With DJ Khaled.” And he’s right on time for the ska revival with the anthemic “Bring Back Ska” (“I thought it was a very colorful era,” Daly says of the genre’s ‘90s resurgence, highlighting household names like Buck-O-Nine in the lyrics). And lest you think Daly is only about jokes, there’s the Jesus and Mary Chain evoking “Profile Picture” and the charming “Love Is So Simple,” both of which feature sincere lyricism and direct performances by Daly.

“It’s dumb,” Daly says of the album, “but also the most personal thing I’ve ever done.” Both ridiculous and genuinely fun, Ding Dong Delicious is pure Jon Daly—an exuberant and hilarious ode to pop forms past and present.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0677/9256/8543/files/Jon-Daly-Digital-Art-2-scaled-e1651581997476.jpg?v=1703790012
drainolith-where-are-ye-col-leslie-groves-c20
Drainolith - Where Are Ye Col. This becomes clear upon listening to their latest full-length record "Wooden Ball", where the unpredictability reaches palpable levels. These prolific young masters of harmony from Brattleboro, Vermont have spent the last couple years recording and releasing nearly 10 full-length records worth of brilliant and confounding musical quicksand. Describing it in words can be difficult, but make no mistake that these songs are both highly calculated, and drenched in paradox. Manic keyboard lines are pounded out with hyper chops, running circles around octopus basslines. Each progression is seemingly different from the last, showing a simultaneous reverence and destruction of the tonal study. Percussion pads are guided by ruthless polyphony at an intense, hummingbird-paced tempo, with lines and melodies colliding at every junction, clashing and crashing, like the most fluid and elegant car wreck you've never seen. The cutting, topical lyrics and deadpan, bare-bones vocal delivery are wholly original, while undoubtedly fueled by the eternal flame of the "punk" spirit and DIY ethics. Most importantly, at the heart of the all the technicality, lies the warmth of the human element. "Wooden Ball", like most BBB, was lovingly recorded to four-track tape, so you can tangibly feel the intention of these spirited musicians. This taps into what seems to be an emerging Vermont-style, evident in other locals artists like Ryan Power, Son Of Salami, Chris Weisman, or Happy Jawbone Family Band – raw, no-rules songwriting, unattached to genre or principal. The revenge of the "small town" feel, where rock and roll is in the eye of the beholder. Comprised of Peter Nichols and Jo Miller-Gamble, Great Valley have been kind enough to bestow their latest opus, “Lizards of Camelot”, to their northern neighbors up here at NNA. “Lizards” manages to cross over from a mere concept album into what we would call more of a “journey” album, by creating a vivid tale of a reptilian-led escapade through lands unknown. Peter and Jo weave this folklore with the classical palette of guitar, drums, vocals and keyboard, resulting in a warbly, technicolor flavor of rock that stands alone in terms of sonics and atmosphere. Tastefully twangy guitar lines flutter out over fat organ bass lines and ultra locked-in drum beats, with a unique concoction of bombastic drum triggers and synthesizer filigree bringing it all together. At times resembling The Cure playing a heated game of D&D, “Lizards” mixes up all the tastiest facets of rock into a cohesive whole, with elements of New Wave, progressive rock, surf guitar shred, and classic Sixties psychedelia all thrown into the mix. Peter’s slithery, love-soaked crooning narrates the adventure, like a bard’s song unfolding over a technical assemblage of rock-blocks. The strong, groove-laden songwriting is reinforced with warped, nitrous balloney interludes melting throughout, with plenty of digital flutes, chimes, and keyboard solos accentuating the odyssey. While hard to categorize, “Lizards Of Camelot” is soaked through with the unmistakable “Brattleboro sound”, fitting in nicely alongside like-minded freaky friends such as Blanche Blanche Blanche, Happy Jawbone Family Band, Chris Weisman, Flaming Dragons of Middle Earth, Big French and so on, many of whom have lent loving contributions to these recordings. Although DIY at heart, “Lizards” has all the makings of a well-conceived and executed proper Album, assembled at home by pouring imagination into an 8-track, like a punk mentality shining through a Brian Wilson-esque lens to create the ultimate bedroom fantasy.

Vinyl LP version – co-released with Feeding Tube Records.
Limited edition pressing of 250 Copies.

Tredici Bacci is 14-piece group of young musicians from Boston, Massachusetts under the impressive orchestral direction of Simon “Luxardo” Hanes, perhaps best known for his madman bass playing in Guerilla Toss. Their debut “cassetta” serves as a celebration of a musical era, fostered by a unique, exciting, and rapidly changing time in history. Tredici Bacci harnesses the essence of classic 1960’s and 1970’s Italian film score music, bathing in the luscious tunes contained within Commedia all’italiana, Giallo slasher, and Spaghetti Western soundtracks. Hanes makes excellent use of traditional orchestration techniques in these pieces, creating a vast sound by employing emotive strings, breezy winds, and an extremely in-the-pocket notated rhythm section. Hanes also beautifully employs the use of the soloist as a thematic melodic voice, with rich, beautiful trumpet playing from Jake Baldwin complimenting the sultry vocals of Sami Stevens. Self-described by the group as “the first half of a two-part absurdist sound saga”, this single piece spread across two sides of magnetic tape unfolds exactly as such. What starts out as a lush, dynamic, and melodic tapestry of almost post-rock soundscapes abruptly collides into a grating wall of upper-register harmonic extended saxophone technique, and continues this journey into confounding new territories throughout the duration of the recording. Nathaniel Morgan, Owen Stewart-Robertson, Weston Minissali, and Booker Stardrum (the latter two also of avant-proggers Cloud Becomes Your Hand) unite respectively on alto saxophone, guitar, synthesizer, and percussion to push the limits of their instruments to the point where fact can no longer be distinguished from fiction. The group is able to use improvisation within a structurally composed framework to take the listener on an emotional and sonic roller coaster ride, see-sawing between styles of music in a such a way that makes the end result impossible to pigeonhole into any one genre. Electro-acoustic passages are punctuated with seemingly-nonsensical text and speech fragments, collaged together as antagonistic sound poetry. What’s perhaps most impressive about “I Love You (Dora Lee)” is it’s ability to straddle the fine (or broad?) line between high-brow and low-brow, where colorful, texturally-rich melodic drones and even Elvis covers are met face-to-face with farting, giggling, chairs creaking, and downright nauseating atmospheres. While the sounds can be musically serious, the overall narrative remains cryptically playful and tongue-in-cheek, a dynamic not often found in the stuffy chambers of academia and improvised music. After graduating from New England Conservatory and spending time playing bass in the then-Boston-based No(ise) Wave unit Guerilla Toss, Hanes adopted the “Luxardo” persona as an arranger, composer, conductor, and guitarist, and went on to assemble a band of epic orchestral proportions. Consisting of close friends and fellow classically-trained musicians, the resulting band is the ambitiously sizeable 14-piece Tredici Bacci. NNA Tapes now has the distinct honor of presenting their first full-length album “Amore Per Tutti” to the world.

Tredici Bacci’s 2014 recorded debut EP “The Thirteen Kisses Cassetta” on NNA introduced the masses to the Luxardo sound world, ripe with the sounds of a past era of time. Now, after nearly two years of diligent work and craftsmanship, Hanes has created an album that presents the next logical step in the band’s development. Retaining the same sonic influences that they wear proudly on their sleeves - classical Italian and French soundtrack music of the Sixties and Seventies, Spaghetti Westerns, big band jazz, lounge, and showtunes to name a few - Tredici Bacci introduces the element of artistic collaboration to bring the band to the next level and give way to a modernization that creates a unique sound like no other. United not by style, genre, or approach, but rather by a mutual love for these classic sounds, Hanes has assembled an incredibly diverse cast of guest musicians to work side by side with his band, ranging from obscure Italian virtuosos, to modern underground heroes, to well-known and established musicians from all backgrounds. This collaborative element forms an unexpected cohesion through Hanes’ talents as a visionary arranger with supreme orchestral chops.

Tracks like “Give Him The Gun”, featuring the vocals of JG Thirwell (Foetus), snarl forth with the pissed off drawl of a grizzled cop, sweating through his wool suit on humid summer day in the dirty city, dodging trash cans through back alleys while in hot pursuit of an evil outlaw. Complete with a grunge-like chorus, the band whales with a funky elegance featuring plenty of raspy horns and adventurous strings. “Vendetta Del Toro”, featuring Charlie Looker (collaborator of Zs and The Dirty Projectors) on vocals, weaves a Western tale of classic revenge as our gunslinging hero reveals his savage plans for ultimate vengeance through a plodding march of triumphant proportions. On “Modern Man”, written and sung by NNA artist Ryan Power, beautifully fluid female vocals accompany Power’s signature smooth croon through a loungey 6/8 shuffle filled with reflections of romance and it’s inherent climaxes and pitfalls. “Slusher”, featuring Vermont’s own Ruth Garbus, finds the band in a Seventies soft fusion setting, rapidly darting around unexpected melodic shifts and robust harmonies, with lush strings interlacing through speedy Bossa rhythms and Garbus’ dynamic vocals. “Drowned”, featuring Jennifer Charles (of Elysian Fields and Lovage; collaborator of John Zorn) is perhaps the most sultry cut on the album. Driven by Luxardo’s deeply twangy electric guitar, it invokes the essence of a dimly lit Parisian café at nightfall, with an air of noir and mystery permeating through Charles’ steamy, forlorn vocal delivery. The album’s closer, “Nessun Dorma”, brings Luxardo’s dreams to life as he joins forces with eccentric Italian multi-instrumentalist and composer Vincenzo Vasi to reinvent this classic Puccini operatic aria. Vasi’s exuberant singing and Italian lyrics would feel right at home with motorbikes zipping by through a narrow cobblestone Roman street, while the band’s accordion and piano lines dance perfectly in stride with the mid-tempo percussion and flawless brass punctuation.

The Bacci band shines brilliantly on every track, reminding us of the exceptional tightness of Hanes’ writing and arrangement with every moment. Tredici Bacci prove themselves to be masters of harnessing the power of mood, capable of captivating the listener through music and transporting them to different worlds in the mind. Hanes’ depth of knowledge of music is made apparent through the wide variety of styles, techniques and moods that he is capable of utilizing alongside his highly talented band, together showcasing true, unbounded musicianship. In an age of information overload and compartmentalization, contemporary dilemmas such as genre or trend can end up imposing limits on creativity. As evidenced by his previous work with NNA and beyond, Ryan Power has spent most of his life immersed in the many realms of music creation. ‘They Sell Doomsday’ is his seventh full-length album, and with dedication to one’s craft comes refinement and mastery. In many ways, this is Power’s most ambitious recorded statement yet, combining the musical palettes of his previous work with explorations into uncharted territories, plus his quintessential attention to sonic detail and innovative lyricism.

In addition to the uniquely colorful electronic environments developed on his previous two albums, Power more prominently integrates his natural talent and foundations in jazz guitar into the mix - smooth solos and tender acoustic pluckings find their homes comfortably in the beds of lush synthesizer chords and metronomic drum machines. While ’They Sell Doomsday’ provides plenty of the perfect, silky pop hits that Power is known for on tracks like “The Cavalry” and “Lazy About Love,” it also contains some of his most complex, challenging work to date. Ryan is fearless in mining the weirder, more demented corners of pop songwriting as the modern world around us follows suit. Songs like “In a Tizzy” or “Issues” at moments sound like looking into a funhouse mirror through a kaleidoscope, with complex lyrical patterns bisecting a Rubik’s cube of melodic shifts, all while somehow being tethered to reality by a steady pulse. Power’s deep exploration of melody and chord changes are pushed to the brink of chaos, creating musically Cubist puzzles that splinter off in unpredictable directions, only to effortlessly land back where they started. Amidst all the hysteria, however, is a foundation of the gorgeous, jazz-influenced chord progressions that define Power’s sound. The common thread across all of the album’s songs which makes the bizarreness so palatable is his ingenious use of melody, even in the most unexpected places, taking the listener on a chromatic merry-go-round of pop songs.

The lyrical themes of ‘They Sell Doomsday’ touch on the building blocks of our contemporary human existence - the future, the past, romance, purpose, human nature, technological mayhem, cerebral disarray - all sifted through the sardonic mind of Ryan Power, and delivered in lyrically beautiful, often cryptic poetics. While perhaps more conceptual than previous albums, the lyrics on 'They Sell Doomsday' also show maturity through self-awareness - of fears, faults, both personally and societally. Power continues to muse on the joys and pains of love, desire, and the inherent duality of their conflicting biological and mystical tendencies. He also touches on the paradoxes found in life’s current social climates, and the struggle to maintain a peaceful isolation from the technological and media frenzies while simultaneously not being categorized as unaware or apathetic. These themes are conducted fluidly through Ryan’s often tongue-in-cheek writing, using abstraction and wordplay in a way that feels less journalistic and more stream-of-consciousness than his previous work.

The highly personal nature of Ryan’s music is reinforced by the fact that the final product is entirely self-built, and his presence in all aspects of it's creation can not only be heard, but felt as well. This record is the definitive statement of a practice and craft refined by it’s creator through passion and time. It is not an album that someone would make for their first, or even their fourth, full-length; this is the work of a highly developed musician in full control of their vision. Known best for his talents on the drum set, Gustin has recorded and toured the world with the likes of Delicate Steve, David Byrne, Rubblebucket, Marc Ribot, his band Star Rover, and many more. On ‘Common Bliss,’ Gustin shares his personal music with the world for the first time, opening the door to The Ah for all to enter. Though instead of considering this music a “solo project,” Gustin instead views The Ah as a collaboration with his own imagination and the world around him. This mentality makes way for an openness and liberation, letting the sounds come to him through dedicated experimentation instead of seeking them out.

‘Common Bliss’ is a largely electronic record, utilizing sampling techniques, synthesizers, and drum programming to create a cohesive signature sound with enough personality to exist in a league of its own. Though it fits into no preconceived mold, The Ah tastefully borrows subtle stylistic idiosyncrasies from a multitude of genres such as pop, dub, hip-hop, idm, and even world music, further contributing to its originality. Given Gustin’s background as a committed musician, these songs are fully developed structurally, indicating a songwriter’s approach to creating left field electronic music. Melody plays a central role here, traversing a variety of moods throughout the album like a cinematic safari through a colorful topography. Ironically enough, there is no drum set present on this record, though Gustin’s talents for rhythm are applied to thoughtful electronic programming, revealing inventive patterns and textures that venture toward more complex rhythmic structures than your average 4/4 looping.

What makes the music of The Ah truly stand out is it’s use of field recordings and organic found sounds to literally breathe life into the music. Frogs, sheep, dolphins, guinea pigs, and baby rhinos are just a few of the creatures that accompany these tracks. Humor and unpredictability are put to good use - the cartoonish, evocative samples ping pong their way throughout the tracks, giving the album a candy-coated quality, steeped in colorful psychedelia. The incredibly lyrical melodies make it easy to imagine vocals, and though occasional textural vocals are present, Gustin instead opts for abstraction through sampling. This pushes narrative and context to the back seat in order to make way for pure sound and imagination, but also for more complex emotions and ambiguity. This emphasis on playfulness gives some insight into the mind of it’s creator: Gustin goes beyond the motions of merely “making a record” and instead has crafted a whole world of his own to innocently explore, a by-product of creative practice and the process of making music without expectation. The Ah is a prime example of a highly personalized music that is a pure and direct extension of it’s creator.

Cassette comes packaged with digital download coupon.

NNA Tapes is ecstatic to present ‘La Fine Del Futuro,’ the brand new full-length album from the dynamic orchestral pop ensemble Tredici Bacci, directed by maniacal composer, arranger, musician and bandleader Simon Hanes. Songs like “In The 1970s,” “Barbarians,” and “Felicity Grows” showcase a powerful new Bacharach-fueled direction, with classic pop essences that would fit comfortably on the hi-fi, the stage, or the silver screen. Instrumental suites such as “Titoli Di Testa,” “Minimalissimo,” and “Ambulette” radiate with cinematic brilliance, each brimming with vibrant horns, playful organ, and illustrious strings that create a tremendous depth of sound - from the lush, tender moments up through the driving, “amped up Fellini” tempos that have become Tredici Bacci’s staple. Vocalist Sami Stevens shines throughout “La Fine Del Futuro” as the album’s main character, demonstrating her voice’s mesmerizing ability to span a multitude of styles - everything from opera, pop, lounge, jazz, folk, and soul are touched upon through her powerful vocals, fitting perfectly into any musical scenario she is placed in. The spirit of collaboration lives on through tracks like “Emmanuelle,” a deranged, gun-slinging take on a yuletide classic featuring JG Thirlwell, as well as on Hanes’ arrangement of “The Cavalry,” the lead single from Ryan Power’s recent NNA masterwork ‘They Sell Doomsday,’ with Power himself on vocal duties, accompanied by Sami Stevens’ gorgeous harmonies.

It is often times hard to comprehend the dizzying orchestrations that Hanes is able to concoct for such a massive band - 20 pieces on this album to be exact - the biggest incarnation of the band yet. However, Tredici Bacci pulls it off with grace and finesse, with Hanes’ arranging and composing talents capturing moods, cinematic nostalgia, and stylistic execution that few composers his age are able to pull off. To think that an eccentric millennial can produce such a diverse and intricate body of work is impressive, and frankly, out of the norm. Tredici Bacci are not afraid to be playful and embrace humor, a trait that makes them unique in the oh-so-serious corridors of classical music, and feels particularly important in a time where image, attitude, and trend often seem to take importance over quality in today’s mainstream. It can be said with utmost confidence that there is no band active today that sounds quite like Tredici Bacci - a feat in itself during an age where all of music history is instantly accessible, and technologically employable by the electronically-inclined masses. The band proudly wears their influences on their sleeves as they continue to comb through music’s past in search of ideas and inspirations, but at the same time always looking forward - growing, learning, and adding new flavor to their personalized approach. The majority of sounds on ‘The Glare Of Success’ are taken from friend and collaborator Sammy Weissberg’s acoustic instrumental arrangements (violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute, double bass and horns), as well as the isolated vocal contributions from Palberta (Ani Ivry-Block, Lily Konigsberg, and Nina Ryser), manipulated and recontextualized by Cathcart through a unique form of musical recycling.

Some songs, such as “Day’s End Dub,” retain the pop song structure of The Cradle’s previous work, with the addition of all new vocals and lyrics placed into fresh musical settings. The sound fidelity itself feels genuinely analog and organically hand-played, linking it further to the dub tradition, the influence this album wears on its sleeve. ‘The Glare Of Success’ emphasizes, in equal parts, Cathcart’s musical versatility, limitless imagination, and the tremendous depth of his influences and inspirations. The daughter of jazz musician parents in Philadelphia, she was influenced at an early age by “The Philly Sound” of soul music songwriting/production duo Gamble and Huff. Getting her start playing her songs in coffee shops, Cohen came up through the disco/funk era of the late 70s and early 80s both as a songwriter and in her band Fun City, before venturing off into synth pop in the mid-1980s with The Vels, then going on to sing and play bass in grunge rock outfit Die Monster Die in the 1990s. Since then, her solo work has built on elements from all of these experiences, as evidenced in her unique and personal hybridized sound. Now, with ‘Artificial Fairytales,’ Cohen has locked into a mode of expression that is dance floor-friendly, yet psychedelic and surreal enough to trip out to in any setting. While elements of these songs are extremely accessible, the deep variety of sonic coloring, dense layering, and creative use of synthesis work together to push the boundaries of status quo pop music. ‘Artificial Fairytales’ has the detail and presence of a studio album, but the fact that it was recorded at home reveals an extra dose of freedom, experimentation, and personality in its details. These 9 songs sit in the more glamorous zones of eighties club and R&B music, though laced with more modern cosmic tendencies through the delicious and stimulating blend of synthesizers, guitar, sax, flute, and drum machine.

Thematically, the album explores the internal fantasy life of “outsider” characters, the theme of the Working Woman, and the transformation of the Old Maid archetype. The songs are reflections of the fairy tales we learn in childhood, reworked into the dreams and realities of a modern day woman. The prince on a white horse, the castles, and dragons, have all crumbled, and melted into a distorted plastic landscape. Women’s work and fantasy life form the undercurrent of ‘Artificial Fairytales’ and are expressed in everyday experiences: getting up at the crack of dawn to go to work, as well as the ”ladies of the night” who frolic in seedy motels and sailor bars. April ’17’s month long Megabus/Greyhound tour was crucial and left me enamored with the idea that I could do a full solo tour without a car, and with the act itself of traveling around by bus (the song “Society of Men” came directly out of a bus station experience from that tour). That September we got pushed out of our house on Prospect Place in Crown Heights where we’d been consistently putting on shows for a few years (as a venue it was called “Bottom Bell”), and where a ton of music was written, practiced and recorded, (including every Cradle album from “Basketball is Beautiful” through “Bag of Holding”).

I was considering not settling back down in New York, thinking about moving or trying to tour and travel indefinitely, but ultimately I got lucky and found a room in November around the corner with friends. I think a lot of this album comes out of that happy coincidence that allowed me to keep living and making music in Brooklyn. The perspective of wonder and curiosity in songs like “End of the Day” or “Children” is involved with a kind of renewed, deepening appreciation for the breadth and wondrousness of the city I grew up in.

Early ’18 saw more traveling and also slowly detangling a longtime romance, and there are admittedly some pained anti-love songs on this album like “Eyes So Clear” and “One Too Many Times”. Hopefully these bluesier feelings are balanced out by the celebration and joy in songs like “Parasite” or “I’ll Walk”, songs about letting go and feeling free.

Form-wise, Laughing in my Sleep was supposed to be a summary album of sorts that would give someone listening to my music for the first time a little taste of everything. Previously, I had been particular when recording about making each project it’s own coherent and distinct sound-world, either through consistent instrumentation or a consistent recording process, but Laughing in My Sleep was the opposite. The drum-machine songs (“I’ll walk” or “See if it Lasts Longer”, for example), were recorded lo-fi on cassette, while the acoustic-guitar ballads were recorded hi(er)-fi on half-inch tape. Some of the songs are voice memos recorded on a cell phone that were supposed to be turned into proper songs later, but which, in retrospect, contained so much feeling and sense of place that I never rerecorded them. I wanted the album to give something different on each listen and give something different to each listener. I wanted there to be many landscapes, some near and some far, and many lenses to see them through, some blurry, and some clear.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0677/9256/8543/files/Screenshot_2024-07-13_at_9.46.44_AM.png?v=1720878424
stephen-becker
Stephen Becker - Nothing Sun Under the New

For Stephen Becker, music is a stream of consciousness.
