It was during this gathering that he spoke about his distress over the plight of the people of East Pakistan (later known as Bangla Desh) in the aftermath of Cyclone Bhola. Being Bengali himself, he talked about wanting to do something to alleviate the suffering. George Harrison, in attendance that day, listened and from those conversations the seed was sown for what would later become the Concert for Bangladesh.

I telephoned Kamala Chakravarty in India, whom you hear on the recording playing tanpura (also Raviji’s one-time partner of twenty-five years) to find out details of the day, what the atmosphere was like. She is eighty-six now and she couldn’t remember in detail – there were so many musical nights! – but said that, at that time, it was not uncommon for Raviji to invite friends over and then all the four Beatles and people like Marlon Brando, Zubin Mehta, and Peter Sellers would to drop by!

This concert recording is unique musically as it is historically. The first piece is a beautiful raga composed by Raviji called Parameshwari. It opens with a little Aochar and a slow Gat in Teen taal of 16 beats and a fast gat in Ek Taal of 12 beats. The inspiration for this Raga goes back to Chengali, a little village near Kolkata. During the filming of his autobiographical film Raga, Raviji traveled to Chengali in the morning sometime in March 1968. While riding in the car, he conceived the nucleus of a melodic form that he later developed and called Kameshwari. By using the old Murchana (scale-wise progression) and Swara Bheda system (getting different ragas by changing the Sa or Do), he discovered three more ragas at the heart of Kameshwari, and Parameshwari was one of them. The other two are Gangeshwari and Rangeshwari. Parameshwari has flashes of known ragas Bageshri, Bhairavi and Bilaskhani Todi but it is pure Raviji.

Let us delve a little into what Raviji achieved when he created his ragas. A raga is not merely a cluster of notes with a theme or a motif. It is bound by some strict principles of its Arohana (ascending) and Avarohana (descending) characteristics. It usually has 5, 6 or 7 notes and sometimes permutations and combinations of these. It should have a Vadi, which is the most important note, and a Sam Vadi, which is usually the 4th or the 5th and note and secondary. What is core to the raga is its Prana or life and its power to be heard and to be propagated, to instill its emotional message in the heart of as many musicians and listeners as possible. Time will tell the validity of a new raga creation, by its acceptance, popularity and longevity. No matter how beautiful the raga, if you are the only one who can perform it, it is not considered to be of any consequence. Raviji’s ragas can be found in many artist repertoires – that tells you the intensity and emotional effect of his music and his creations.

Also playing brilliantly on this recording is Ustad Alla Rakha or Abbaji, as he was affectionately addressed, Raviji’s tabla accompanist of twenty-five years. You can hear Raviji’s appreciation and excitement for Abbaji’s improvisations during the performance. On Dhun you hear pure Raviji in all his sensuality and mastery! Raviji dedicated Dhun to Bangla Desh, again, telling you what was on his mind and weighing on his heart at the time. The final piece is Sindhi Bhairavi in Thumri (meaning “light classical style”). Raviji’s hands are flying in the fast Drut composition, but at he loses not one bit of musicality. Towards the end, the musical conversation between sitar and tabla is incredible. Hearing Raviji’s inimitable laughter at the conclusion broke my heart. Oh I miss him so much…but am so grateful we can share his music with you.

– Sukanya Shankar, 2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0677/9256/8543/files/Ravi-Shankar-In-Hollywood-Cover_web-e1646851928473.jpg?v=1703788727
cloud-becomes-your-hand-rest-in-fleas
Cloud Becomes Your Hand - Rest In Fleas
Rest In Fleas by cloud becomes your hand

Like visions from a 3D comic book, color fantasies explode in vivid new sound-tones on Cloud Becomes Your Hand’s Rest in Fleas. All members of the band huddled over sheet music on music stands illuminated by floodlights. The band was known for ensemble style rather than individual styles of the players, and developed a particular reputation for a near pathological commitment to unison execution of counter intuitive rhythms at an ear splitting volume, or at a virtually inaudible volume. Additionally, the band wore uniforms, a way of drawing attention away from the people playing in the band, and toward the group responsible for the monolithic rhythms and harmonies Zs spun out relentlessly at early shows. This stands in stark contrast to the emphasis on individual style found in Zs’ recent work. Combined with Grimm’s vocal heft and hippie underpinnings, the subsequent work frequently brings to mind Astral Weeks (an album that Grimm, naturally, has never heard). Meanwhile, her songwriting remains potent and considered. Lyrics are more direct than on past records, particularly those addressing motherhood—the album’s recurring, if not quite dominant, theme. It is called Chasing an Illusion, and it was recorded in a dank, moldy cave in Gowanus, Brooklyn by Martin Bisi, using a decade old vintage version of Pro Tools on a long obsolete computer, and the same dusty, unlabeled mixing board used for David Bowie's Young Americans. The band was made up of generally all my true loves at once. This is an album about higher love, and truth. Truth in sound, accomplished by recording live, keeping the vocals raw, hearing the actual sound of the room, and letting the out of tune and out of time parts celebrate our humanity and imperfection. That is the beauty of this album, as we honor the perfection of the divine energy that we invoke through the ritual trance of this music.

In the private viewing room at Riverside Church I was standing in awe above Ornette Coleman's body. Yoko Ono held a white scarf she had knitted with her precious artist's hands for Ornette to keep him warm. What does it feel like as life moves through these chapters and has to bounce around the echoes they leave behind? With his second solo album Inverted Jenny, Ross Goldstein patiently ponders this theme as he travels through a glowing internal world, observing moments of both stillness and the sublime from a distance. There’s a sheen of loneliness that runs throughout, but never a bitterness. The record opens with a trifecta of Van Dyke Parks-tinged open road songs, but even in the joyful discovery of these songs there’s the sense that they’re viewed from a loner’s perspective. This feeling only grows as things shift from roadside distractions to the plush instrumentals and gentle vibes that make up the record’s second half. Gorgeous arrangements set up a playful conversation between warm synths, stoned guitar leads, meticulously placed touches of chamber pop orchestration and even sounds of the natural world from Ross’ own field recordings, always buzzing with life. An incredibly personal product of a sole creator, even when guest players came by to record additional parts, they would confer with Ross and overdub their parts in hushed one-on-one sessions, rather than more collaboratively-minded large ensemble sessions. This chapter of the already isolated process furthered the strange intimacy of the album.

Lyrics and vocal parts were written for most of the songs, but as the recording continued, some songs seemed to say more as instrumentals, lyrics feeling overwrought or even redundant. Possibly informed by his work collecting field recordings, Ross made the deliberate decision to scrap vocals from a good number of the tracks, offering them up as scenes without dialogue, every bit as important to the bigger picture as their sung counterparts. By the end of the album we’ve walked alongside for a while, watching the songs navigate their lonesome internal landscape like a late night passing blissfully into morning. It convenes with the ghosts of the past while marching relentlessly forwards.

Drawn from experiences as far-flung as riding a train from San Francisco to Chicago with an old-style, rootin'-tootin' cowboy for company (“Cowboy Song”), to experiencing the intense natural beauty of Icelandic waterfalls (“Dettifoss”), it’s a record that taps into the musical traditions of the past while being a collection of songs about living in the moment.

Raised by pioneering parents on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, NYC, Odetta’s milieu was a “colorful culture of artistry,” that included early exposure to community activism, renegade film screenings, poetry readings and trips to CBGB's. Inchoate punk and hip hop were aural wallpaper, as were the 45s spinning in the household jukebox featuring her dad’s extensive collection of soul and afrobeat records, as well as her Appalachian mother’s classic country selections. A classically trained violinist with a penchant for back-porch banjo, Odetta combines these variegated sounds of her childhood with her personal passion for folk music and the musicological legacy of Alan Lomax.

Lomax is writ large on Old Rockhounds... at least in spirit anyway. Odetta plays all the instruments on this and her debut 222, which made problematic the changeovers between songs when playing live. Field recordings the singer had collected on her travels were utilized to make such transitions seamless, and so successful was that intermingling of songs and soundscapes that they’ve transitioned into the recording process. It makes for a strangely intimate listen: tingly and a little tipsy: an album for twilight, sitting within the nocturnal hinterland between dusk and somnambulance - candlelit and confidential - a time for stories and secrets.

So far, so old skool. And yet, Old Rockhounds Never Die also embraces modernity without ever sounding incongruous. The mix of manipulated 21st century beats and the musical traditions of centuries meet at a crossroads and consummate their curiosity without inhibition. It’ll probably not surprise anyone listening to the album then that its a co-production. Odetta writes and performs all the songs while her partner Jack Inslee is in the background bringing the digital dark arts. Experimenting with found sounds & foley, the two have developed a sonic vernacular built around playing around with a-typical instruments. Hartman explains: “Many of the beats on the album were recorded in the kitchen: the snare sound is actually a running faucet, or if you hear these glockenspiel bells that's actually a set of kitchen bowls. Other percussive elements include scissors, a pepper grinder and keys on the radiator.”

Hartman was performing in a 10-piece band when she met Jack, who then challenged her to strip everything back and explore her own singular talent. The first fruits of this experiment were borne on the aforementioned, critically acclaimed 222. In 2015, Stereogum said: “Her impulse to mix elements of folk, bluegrass, and Americana with experimental or warped psychedelia is bridged by her strength as a lyricist, and the strength of the record’s producer Jack Inslee.” Old Rockhounds... takes the blueprint and improves upon it, with songs yet more vivid, sensual and cinematic. “Widow’s Peak” in particular is peak Hartman, a spooky tale that came to her like a bolt of lightning one day. It’s a gorgeous lullaby that builds stealthily, then - like a levee of violins rather than water - it bursts forth. That special moment was actually originally a mistake in the studio.

“It was a happy accident,” says Odetta. “We played back all of the test takes together by mistake and fell in love with the wall of sound. I love mistakes in songwriting or recording, because they so often lead to something greater.” The title track, meanwhile, came as a moment of inspiration that seemed to also come from another place. Elements of free improvisation, Sun Ra’s cosmic jazz, gorgeous Arabic melody, trancelike African and Yemeni music and minimalism meet in his wholly unique compositional vision. Louca also makes vital contributions on guitar and piano, and inspires stirring performances from a global lineup.

Simply put, Elephantine—which Louca calls “by far my most ambitious work”—would stand as a grand achievement for any musician, of any background. But for an artist hailing from Egypt, where the history of expression has been equally brilliant and daunting, the album is astounding.

In recent years, Louca has become something of an ambassador for his nation’s thriving experimental music scene, via two previous solo records and an evolving lineup of genre-defying collaborations. The Wire called his 2014 sophomore effort, Salute the Parrot, “remarkable music—dense, driven and splashed with colour.” In 2017, the self-titled debut by Lekhfa, the trio of Louca and vocalists Maryam Saleh and Tamer Abu Ghazaleh, was praised as an “edgy triumph” in The Guardian. This past July, Louca appeared again in The Wire, in a cover story on “Cairo’s new wave” that featured his solo work as well as the Dwarfs of East Agouza, his mesmeric unit with Sam Shalabi and Sun City Girls’ Alan Bishop.

Louca’s narrative begins with music we all know, albeit in circumstances that most of us can’t imagine. Born in Cairo in 1982, he started on guitar at age 12, and became immersed in the music of the MTV era, as well as such 60s psychedelic mainstays as Pink Floyd, Hendrix, and the Doors. These were pre-Internet years in a country with state-run media, so access was scarce; tapes were dubbed and traded at school, along with bits and pieces of information. By the mid-to-late-’90s, spurred on by a media panic that connected metal fans to Satanic ritual, the state had essentially outlawed live rock music. Louca, just in his early teens, was able to rehearse with his bands and explore his burgeoning interest in songwriting. But booking gigs was almost impossible, and he witnessed older generations playing rock and metal become targets of the authorities. “It was a very, very depressing time to be a musician,” he reflects.

As the ’90s became the aughts, the reins were loosened on live music, and Louca’s tastes eventually expanded into classical and contemporary Arabic music, especially the street-level pop called shaabi, as well as the avant-garde and electronic music. Accordingly, his toolbox grew to include the synthesizer, laptop, sampler and drum machine. Following the Arab Spring protests of 2011, a galvanized DIY scene developed in Cairo, building upon the passion and elbow grease of the music and arts community that’d been gathering steam in Egypt throughout the prior decade. Artists, promoters and fans could suddenly operate without police oversight, and the results were remarkable, with shows attracting large numbers of concertgoers.

Sadly, as new leadership has taken hold in Egypt, and as those leaders have been alarmed by the sight of tens of thousands of spirited young people joining together, performance opportunities have regressed. A system of dedicated promoters and artists has been replaced by what preceded it, namely embassies and institutions with the funds to throw events in an economically distressed nation. A mind-boggling 14 governmental permits are required to throw the average gig, in addition to other requisite bribes and payoffs. Not surprisingly, the lack of operational spaces is dismaying. “When you have millions of people and around 10 venues,” Louca says, “there’s something wrong.” Despite these challenges, Egypt continues to provide fertile ground for Louca and his peers, like the celebrated Egyptian visual artist Maha Maamoun, who contributes the album’s cover art. Today, the Egyptian scene is a familiar feature of contemporary art and experimental music festivals across Europe.

Certain components of Elephantine, especially Louca’s use of avant-jazz-style improv, a developing fascination, required the composer to go outside Egypt’s rich talent pool and tap players from Italy, Iraq, Sweden, Turkey and Denmark. The sessions, however, held in 2017 in Stockholm, made these efforts worthwhile. “There was a blessed thing about the process of making this record,” he says. “The dynamic between us musically but also as people … it was a very exciting time.”

Tommaso Cappellato (Drums/Percussions)
Ozun Usta (Drums/Percussions)
Elsa Bergman (Bass)
Pasquale Mirra (Vibraphone)
Piero Bittolo (Baritone Sax/Alto Sax/Bass Flute)
Anna Högberg (Alto Sax)
Rasmus Kjærgård Lund (Tuba)
Isak Hedtjärn (Clarinet/Bass Clarinet)
Nadah El Shazly (Vocals)
Natik Awayez (Oud)
Ayman Asfour (Violin)
Maurice Louca (Guitar/Piano)

Recorded by: Ronny Lahti
(In the Palm of a Ghost) recorded by: Adham Zidan
Mixed by: Adham Zidan
Mastered by: Heba Kadry

Barn Songs by Fay Victor

When Fay Victor found herself struggling to break into New York City’s jazz scene in the ‘90s, the singer and composer took a gamble on moving to Amsterdam to hone her voice and develop her improvisational instincts—a move that transformed Victor from a straight ahead jazz singer into a daring vocal improviser. Much of her childhood was spent in a church, where she also studied classical piano and sang in the choir. Although she was encouraged to pursue a consecrated life, she chose a different path, dissociating from religion. The following years brought continual transitions of personhood and place. From housekeeping at a Death Valley motel, to tree-planting in Georgia, she explored different sides of herself, chasing ideals yet avoiding certain truths. As she reckoned with her own malleability, she came to understand the value of leaving something behind. The solitude and disenchantment that accompanied this lifestyle gave way to introspection, yielding the songs that became the Joys of Forgetting.

Like memory itself, Krieger’s personal growth ebbs and flows across The Joys of Forgetting. She learns to seek comfort in patience, finding that affection is easy, but loving takes time. Her arrangements are elegant and unobtrusive, skirting her crystalline voice with acoustic guitar, curling strings, and percussion that gently tumbles. When he depicts the knotted tangle of falling in love, experiencing suicidal ideation, coming face-to-face with cancer, and healing through grief at the core of these songs, he does so with a ray of sunshine tucked in his pocket. Even the saddest tracks offer a reason to carry on. On the third album from Office Culture, the Brooklyn-based band led by pianist-songwriter Winston Cook-Wilson, the magic is in how every element of their texturally rich, emotionally complex music conjures these same visions. The choruses offer humble pledges (“I only want you to be happy”) and uneasy interruptions (“Stop, I feel nervous”); the band swells and sprawls; the arrangements incorporate strings, horns, and backing vocals, suggesting how each moment casts its own shadow.

Office Culture’s most ambitious project is also their most intimate and thematically focused. Comprising Cook-Wilson alongside drummer Pat Kelly, bassist Charlie Kaplan, and guitarist Ian Wayne, Office Culture have never sounded so dynamic or alive, their music so full of intricate detail and open air. While you can still hear traces of their longtime staples—Joni Mitchell, the Blue Nile, the ECM catalog—Big Time Things expands into new and adventurous territory. Occasionally, it recalls Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters band backing Scott Walker in the 1980s; other times, it feels like D’Angelo’s Voodoo recast as an opera.

As Cook-Wilson sings about feelings that transcend language (“A Word”) and moods that shift too quietly to be registered (“Suddenly”), he seeks to break from any songwriting tradition, following his thoughts to their open-ended conclusions. As a member of the Red Light District collective in Queens, NY (which has included some of the best in modern experimental musicians such as Yellow Tears, Pharmakon, John Mannion, Diaphragm, DJ Dog Dick and a slurry of other side projects, solo projects and collaborations), former member of the Cathode Terror Secretion and current performer in Cowards, in addition to producing and performing under the guise of several other solo projects (Hollow Seed, Goldeater, etc), Jesse has been actively pursuing many diverse avenues for his musical expression. Migrations In Rust, whose original sonic intentions could have at one time been more easily categorized as “ambient” music, has slowly shifted towards the unrecognizable. Migrations In Rust has ascertained as Jesse’s longest running solo endeavor and holds as his most personal, having transformed from merely a study of emotion and a practice of understanding emotions into something altogether more grand and wholly personal. Three years in the making, during which Jesse relocated from New York City to the valley of Western Massachusetts, “Two Shadows” communicates the yolk of this transformation. The elements of interplay between turmoil and tranquility, and the means of composing “organically” to achieve these results, have been filtered through new approaches in an attempt to reach closer to a finer understanding of grace, and towards more precisely using music and sound as a vessel of psychic emotional transmission. Throughout the record, orchestral landscapes blend with rustling concrete textures, settling in a purgatory between melancholy bleakness and slow-burning serenity. Each second is densely packed with incredible detail and carefully-layered instrumentation, crafted with an expansive palette of acoustic, electronic, and naturally-occurring sound sources. Amorphous melodic passages travel with well-paced fluidity from one idea to the next, producing a dream-like narrative. At times placid and evocative, “Two Shadows” also has a tendency to teeter on the edge of powerful ferocity, sometimes brewing with crackling fury while tastefully maintaining the restraint not to explode into outright violence. This shifting temper is constructed with elements of noise, ambient, hip hop, musique concréte, and sci-fi R&B, all finding their place in the innovative tapestry that unfolds across “Two Shadows”. Tredici Bacci harnesses the essence of classic 1960’s and 1970’s Italian film score music, bathing in the luscious tunes contained within Commedia all’italiana, Giallo slasher, and Spaghetti Western soundtracks. Hanes makes excellent use of traditional orchestration techniques in these pieces, creating a vast sound by employing emotive strings, breezy winds, and an extremely in-the-pocket notated rhythm section. New York City based composer and performer Patrick Higgins has appointed NNA with a highly original concept in the presentation of New Music – a “mix” or sampling of personal experimentations spanning from 2009 to the present day, intended specifically for the cassette format. Higgins, perhaps best known for his guitar work in avant-garde music group Zs and production work with Future-Past Studios, is able to accurately demonstrate his versatility as both a composer and performer through this diverse collection of recording studies. Very little territory is left uncharted as Higgins makes use of piano, harpsichord, synthesizer, guitar, violin, sampler, computer processing, and even group ensemble to communicate his unique musical vision. Bringing a genuinely modern voice to composition, the artist draws on contemporary pop culture influence (underground art rock, independent pop, noise) along with nods to 60’s minimalism (Riley, Glass, Meredith Monk) and classical Western electro-acoustic composition. The studies on this release range from the highly dissonant to the more consonant as Higgins blends found sound and electro-acoustic texture with harmonic notes, creating further originality by combining elements of improvisation with written score. Pieces like “Pattern Select” blast apart with pointillistic, colorful synth programming that builds its power through the precise use of dissonance, recalling the work of Babbitt, Boulez, and the French pioneers of early musique concrete. The “Curves, Points, Lines” series of tracks demonstrates the inventive studio layering of unorthodox acoustic instrument sounds, as Higgins dissects the intricacies of the various sounds made by the violin and rearranges them into something completely new. “Live At Oberlin” brings the music outside of the studio into the arena of performance, as Higgins lends his abilities to a group improvisation setting, using guitar and laptop to build new sonic worlds together with the Mivos Quartet on string instruments. “Social Death Mixtape” succeeds at showcasing Higgins’ prowess not only as a musician, but as a generally well-rounded artist, whether its as a composer and arranger, instrumentalist, live performer, electronic producer, or studio engineer. The experience of this release is further enhanced by the originality of creating an “audio sketchbook” for the modern composer by tapping into one of the earliest and most classical essences of the cassette tape medium - the “mix.”

Comes with free mp3 download coupon.

Over the last few years, the young musician and composer Simon Hanes has worked tirelessly to channel his deep love and infatuation with 1960’s/1970’s soundtrack music into his own personal vision and homage to the style through dedicated songwriting, and the integration of the totality of his musical influences. After graduating from New England Conservatory and spending time playing bass in the then-Boston-based No(ise) Wave unit Guerilla Toss, Hanes adopted the “Luxardo” persona as an arranger, composer, conductor, and guitarist, and went on to assemble a band of epic orchestral proportions. Consisting of close friends and fellow classically-trained musicians, the resulting band is the ambitiously sizeable 14-piece Tredici Bacci. NNA Tapes now has the distinct honor of presenting their first full-length album “Amore Per Tutti” to the world.

Tredici Bacci’s 2014 recorded debut EP “The Thirteen Kisses Cassetta” on NNA introduced the masses to the Luxardo sound world, ripe with the sounds of a past era of time. Now, after nearly two years of diligent work and craftsmanship, Hanes has created an album that presents the next logical step in the band’s development. Retaining the same sonic influences that they wear proudly on their sleeves - classical Italian and French soundtrack music of the Sixties and Seventies, Spaghetti Westerns, big band jazz, lounge, and showtunes to name a few - Tredici Bacci introduces the element of artistic collaboration to bring the band to the next level and give way to a modernization that creates a unique sound like no other. United not by style, genre, or approach, but rather by a mutual love for these classic sounds, Hanes has assembled an incredibly diverse cast of guest musicians to work side by side with his band, ranging from obscure Italian virtuosos, to modern underground heroes, to well-known and established musicians from all backgrounds. This collaborative element forms an unexpected cohesion through Hanes’ talents as a visionary arranger with supreme orchestral chops.

Tracks like “Give Him The Gun”, featuring the vocals of JG Thirwell (Foetus), snarl forth with the pissed off drawl of a grizzled cop, sweating through his wool suit on humid summer day in the dirty city, dodging trash cans through back alleys while in hot pursuit of an evil outlaw. Complete with a grunge-like chorus, the band whales with a funky elegance featuring plenty of raspy horns and adventurous strings. “Vendetta Del Toro”, featuring Charlie Looker (collaborator of Zs and The Dirty Projectors) on vocals, weaves a Western tale of classic revenge as our gunslinging hero reveals his savage plans for ultimate vengeance through a plodding march of triumphant proportions. On “Modern Man”, written and sung by NNA artist Ryan Power, beautifully fluid female vocals accompany Power’s signature smooth croon through a loungey 6/8 shuffle filled with reflections of romance and it’s inherent climaxes and pitfalls. “Slusher”, featuring Vermont’s own Ruth Garbus, finds the band in a Seventies soft fusion setting, rapidly darting around unexpected melodic shifts and robust harmonies, with lush strings interlacing through speedy Bossa rhythms and Garbus’ dynamic vocals. “Drowned”, featuring Jennifer Charles (of Elysian Fields and Lovage; collaborator of John Zorn) is perhaps the most sultry cut on the album. Driven by Luxardo’s deeply twangy electric guitar, it invokes the essence of a dimly lit Parisian café at nightfall, with an air of noir and mystery permeating through Charles’ steamy, forlorn vocal delivery. The album’s closer, “Nessun Dorma”, brings Luxardo’s dreams to life as he joins forces with eccentric Italian multi-instrumentalist and composer Vincenzo Vasi to reinvent this classic Puccini operatic aria. Vasi’s exuberant singing and Italian lyrics would feel right at home with motorbikes zipping by through a narrow cobblestone Roman street, while the band’s accordion and piano lines dance perfectly in stride with the mid-tempo percussion and flawless brass punctuation.

The Bacci band shines brilliantly on every track, reminding us of the exceptional tightness of Hanes’ writing and arrangement with every moment. Tredici Bacci prove themselves to be masters of harnessing the power of mood, capable of captivating the listener through music and transporting them to different worlds in the mind. Hanes’ depth of knowledge of music is made apparent through the wide variety of styles, techniques and moods that he is capable of utilizing alongside his highly talented band, together showcasing true, unbounded musicianship. In an age of information overload and compartmentalization, contemporary dilemmas such as genre or trend can end up imposing limits on creativity. As a performer, Bertucci has worked primarily with amplified woodwind instruments, creating enigmatic electro-acoustic interventions of the bass clarinet and saxophone in conjunction with tape collage and electronics. Her latest release on NNA, however, explores her work as a composer, which investigates extended acoustic resonance on classical instruments and their potential to powerfully occupy physical space. The two sides of this cassette contain two different pieces that exist around a common concept – the live performance of extended technique on stringed instruments, and the otherworldly way that the resulting sound exists in the space in which it is created.

The first piece, “The Cepheid Variations”, is a recent piece for viola, cello, and magnetic tape collage, premiered in January 2015 as the first performance of Bertucci’s 2015 ISSUE Project Room Residency. Born out of an interest in the timbral and acoustic possibilities of harmonics, these pieces combine extended techniques for cello (performed by Leila Bordreuil), viola (performed by Jeanann Dara), combined with live concrete sound generated from magnetic tape, performed by Bertucci herself. Drawing upon the natural acoustics of ISSUE’s 22 Boerum Place theater, “The Cepheid Variations” examines the movement of sound in space through the use of dissonance, wide dynamic fluctuations, and particular sonic textures. Beginning with a pensive, ghostly landscape, the viola and cello explore glassy, fragile frequencies to their most powerful capability. A variety of bowing techniques are utilized by the performers, from slow, meandering pulses to frenetic scraping. Each subtlety in the physical manipulation of the instrument reveals new variations to the overall tension of the piece. The introduction of tape collage expands and adds dimension, introducing new frequencies into the sound field that cleverly juxtaposes the live instrumentation with pre-recorded sonic material.

The second piece, “Double Bass Crossfade”, positions two double bassists (James Ilgenfritz and Sean Ali) at opposite corners of the Knockdown Center’s 50,000 square foot main room. The instruments are wirelessly amplified, allowing the performers to slowly move across the room over the course of 40 minutes, meeting in the center and then crossing to each other’s original starting positions. Using a custom installed 10-channel sound system, the sounds of the performer’s instruments are dynamically routed from speaker to speaker according to their physical position, creating in their wake a mutable, engulfing sound field. The piece begins with the hypnotic, gentle bowing of the bass in its upper registers, but gains intensity as the piece progresses, finding its most powerful moments with a loud, rumbling low end that showcases the incredible acoustic power of the double bass. Tremendous depth is achieved through the layering of contrasting harmonics from each player, as the two performers engage with each other in focused technique, listening intently and creating a symbiosis through sound. Condensed from the original 10-channels to the stereo field for the purposes of this release, duality is the emphasis of this piece – in the musicians, their physical positioning, and their location in the stereo field. But as they eventually reach the lower ends of the register, the sounds they produce blend and fuse together into one raucous, engulfing whole.

The two pieces on this cassette demonstrate the incredible amount of dynamic diversity that can be achieved by the phenomenon of vibrating metallic strings. Resonance and frequency are thoroughly explored with thought, care, and dedication. These works reveal a fresh voice in new music, while also championing the pioneers of the 20th century avant-garde – recalling the tonal curiosity of Ligeti, the emotional power and sensitivity of Arvo Part, the strident minimalism of Tony Conrad, and the unflinching violence of George Crumb. Bertucci exhibits a keen and perceptive ear for nuanced acoustic sound, and a passion for focused musical investigation is made evident through her compositions. Stepping aside from the role of performer, ‘All That Is Solid Melts Into Air’ shows us a different side of Bertucci’s repertoire – that of the writer and composer. This album reinforces her talents not only as a player, but as an imaginative explorer of music’s more cerebral and metaphysical outer limits.

Cassette comes packaged with digital download coupon.

“Bertucci’s compositions are stark, resonant, and certainly something to behold” – Ad Hoc

“Bertucci uses strings (and tape/amplification) to mirror the vibrations of breath, making near-hypnotic rhythms that seem circular even as they are continuously changing” – Tiny Mix Tapes

“One gets the sense that Bertucci arrives at her work not with an idea to impose, but a question to develop.” – Pitchfork

Dancing On Soda Lake by Wren Kitz
NNA Tapes is very pleased to present the latest full-length recording from Burlington, Vermont artist Wren Kitz. Following up his debut album “For Evelyn” back in 2015, “Dancing On Soda Lake” continues confidently in the unique and personal style of music that Wren has carved out for himself over the years. By blending traditional guitar-and-voice songwriting with field recording and tape collage experimentation, Kitz has developed a ghostly and contemplative form of musical expression all his own that breaks down walls between genre categorizations. Together with a newly-assembled band consisting of percussion and strings, “Dancing On Soda Lake” is Kitz’s most fully-realized and captivating effort to date.

With a recurring aqueous motif both lyrically and sonically, “Dancing On Soda Lake” captures this essence elegantly throughout the gentle impermanence of it’s luminous song cycle, flowing freely back and forth between beauty and mystery, not unlike our own plasmic origins. Wren’s sensitive vocal delivery drifts carefully between loose, rhythmic tempos and plucks of the guitar, punctuated by swells of percussion and heart-wrenching harmonies from the bass, cello, and violin. The oblique lyrics hint at a narrative, though never fully disclose their true intentions, utilizing abstractions in language to shroud meaning, the way that dusk envelops a landscape. Themes of confusion, isolation, and existentialism indicate that there is a distinct darkness buried in these songs… though it is not articulated through sonic aggression, but rather through mood by way of wistful melancholia and bittersweet recollection.

The most intriguing aspect of Kitz’s compositions is his ardent dedication to magnetic tape, unlocking its tangible and nostalgic qualities not only through recording, but through instrumental utilization as well. A dedicated field recorder, Wren’s travels with his tape recorder yield a trove of extracted sonic memories that he is able to access in his songs through manipulation and collage. Wren captures literal moments from his life and recontextualizes them as musical elements, building textures and atmospheres from a faded reality, from subtle rustlings to roaring oceanic vastness. This blending of fidelities creates a very dynamic listen by constructing a hypnagogic tension between traditional songwriting and avant-garde experimentation. Through Wren’s distinctive musical vision and his tasteful mastery of his materials, “Dancing On Soda Lake” manifests as an intimate yet mystifying album, like viewing a sparkling body of water through a distorted lens.

Cassette comes packaged with digital download coupon.

"It’s a gorgeous and discomfiting tribute to the frustrating limits of the physical form, while still able to recall the ethereal bitcrush of forgotten, secret worlds."–SPIN Magazine

“It’s an underwater dance that is portrayed in the album, made of muffled sounds and slow movings, leaving the listener as fluctuating in the still aquatic reservoir watching the sunlight filtering through the transparent substance."
–Guia Cortassa, Gold Flake Paint

“Dancing On Soda Lake, building off of the stylistic world he created with For Evelyn, is an initially approachable dream/soundscape that pays dividends in transcendent, previously hidden harmonies, newly perceptible bits of texture, and buried snippets of field recordings revealing more of themselves with each repeat play.”
–Elisabeth Fuchsia, POST-TRASH

'EVRLY MVSIC' by Patrick Higgins & Josh Modney
We’re very proud to have the innovative composer and performer Patrick Higgins return to NNA Tapes, this time in a duo format with acclaimed violinist Josh Modney. On 2015’s ‘Social Death Mixtape,’ we witnessed Higgins’ talents as a composer, creating intricate electroacoustic compositions with a variety of performers. On ‘EVRLY MVSIC’ however, we hear Higgins as a skilled performer on his primary instrument, the guitar. Josh Modney comes from a similar background, having established himself as a prominent figure in New York City’s New Music circuit, with work ranging from the chamber music group International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), to composer-performer collective Wet Ink Ensemble. Having shared the stage together for the past 5 years both as improvisers and as chamber musicians, the foundation of ’EVRLY MVSIC’ is built on a long term musical connection between Modney and Higgins, a bond that is made evident throughout these recordings.

On ‘EVRLY MVSIC,’ the two performers have taken the concept of “Early Music” as a stimulus to inspire performances of acoustic improvisation that aim at a compositional tightness, creating a musical framework based more around the feeling, rather than the sound, of Medieval struggle. Tightly coiled around highly virtuosic and austere interactions, Higgins and Modney harness the essence of Early Music both in sentiment as well as gesture, using guitar and violin in unorthodox ways that sometimes recall the sounds of early stringed instruments such as the oud and viol. Each instrument inherently carries the capacity for both classical beauty and textural violence, both of which are employed with tasteful skill and execution. Improvisation in this project is neither free nor, strictly speaking, structured. Instead, it is aimed at an emergent form in the instant, looking toward song structure in the most novel and ancient sense. Noise and extended technique are used to create a lyrical aching quality, while melody is used to create unsettling noise.

Throughout the album, EVRLY MVSIC displays a linear progression of material, building over the course of three "Partitas.” The first two utilize an arcane, sparse musical language of plucked sounds strangely reminiscent of Renaissance lute music, advancing to a lushly harmonized set of microtonal, cantabile pieces that explore the full expressive range of violin and acoustic guitar. What furthermore adds to the uniqueness of this album, however, is the third Partita, which introduces electric guitar and real-time electronic processing on both instruments to culminate in an expansive, relentlessly energetic display of refreshing new sounds. The original acoustic palette of guitar and violin is retained, but vastly expanded upon, injecting a dense, unpredictable modern edge into the archaic atmosphere. ‘EVRLY MVSIC’ presents an incredibly original fusion between ancient European musical history and distinctly American experimentalism, hinged on the nexus between improvisation and chamber music, and fueled by a deeply personal musical alliance.

The Fool by LEYA
NNA is honored to present ‘The Fool,’ the debut album from NYC-based duo LEYA. Violinist Adam Markiewicz (The Dreebs) and harpist Marilu Donovan have succeeded in creating an incredibly original sound for their project. They combine modernity and antiquity with their chosen instruments by taking ideas from contemporary pop and experimental music, and seamlessly integrating them into classical instrumentation and moods. Utilizing a combination of normal and detuned intervals together with ethereal layered vocals, the resulting sound of LEYA is unmistakable and haunting. It is both ancient and singular in tone, but remains open to the influences and ideas of the modern day underground in it’s structural simplicity.

LEYA aims to deconstruct the traditional connotations of the harp and violin by luxuriating in the deviant juxtaposition of ugliness vs. beauty. These two stringed instruments are most commonly associated with classical beauty, but by altering their sound through unorthodox tunings, extended techniques, amplification, and effects, Donovan and Markiewicz are able to mine the depths of their darker, more unsettling capacities. The tuning system created for Donovan’s harp is specific to the project, and was discovered by chance. Rather than being driven by scientific or conceptual intentions, this tuning is chosen based on it’s sound alone, giving LEYA a defined identity that embraces human instinct and imperfection.

The duo achieves a deeper contrast by seeking to write pop songs with simple, transparent forms. The song structures are left open and sparse in the spirit of creating clear and simple sonic terrain that is meant to grab the listener emotionally, rather than forcing them to analyze the material. The staccato harp pluckings are complemented by long, sustained notes and chords from the violin, creating a dynamic foundation of strings for the vocals to fill in the cracks and crevices. In this sense, the dual vocals are used almost as a textural element or third instrument, where the way the words actually sound takes precedence over the lyrical content. The slow, drawn-out compositional pace of these songs brings them closer to “ambient” territory, enhancing the evocative qualities of the instruments while floating carefully between eerie dissonance and the angelic higher stratospheres of transcendent beauty.

The latter half of ‘The Fool’ brings in a series of guest collaborators from the modern American experimental underground, showing the range of experience and influence that informs LEYA’s sound. Eartheater, PC Worship, and Sunk Heaven each contribute their own signature style to the tracks, but also adapt remarkably well to LEYA’s sound world, due to the open, yet firmly distinct, sonic identity established by Markiewicz and Donovan. In this sense, the power of ‘The Fool’ lies not only in it’s elegant simplicity, but in it’s ability to employ classically expressive atmosphere to suspend the listener in a blissful state of confusion, where the feeling of sound itself is more important than where it comes from.

Mastered by James Plotkin.
Cassette comes packaged with digital download coupon.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0677/9256/8543/files/NNA113-digital-border-e1648054427926.png?v=1714759909
the-cradle-bag-of-holding
The Cradle - Bag Of Holding
Bag of Holding by The Cradle
NNA is very proud to present new music from The Cradle, the artistic alias of New York City-based musician Paco Cathcart. His latest album ‘Bag Of Holding’ presents a more serene version of Cathcart’s guitar-and-voice based songwriting, integrating orchestral arrangements, spirited collaboration, and brilliant production techniques to give way to The Cradle’s most singular and focused work to date. In addition to working as a recording engineer focusing on analog mediums, Cathcart has honed his craft over the years as a member of bands such as Big Neck Police, Shimmer and Climax Landers, all the while prolifically crafting nearly 30 personal solo albums and experiments across various labels and self-releases. ‘Bag Of Holding’ takes all of these experiences and uses them thoughtfully to build a masterful, proper full-length album of highly personal and expressive orchestral pop compositions.

What makes ‘Bag of Holding’ shine are its incredibly vivid and stunning instrumental arrangements. Sammy Weissberg, a longtime friend and musical partner of Cathcart, wrote and arranged the bulk of the non-guitar music on the album, with the intent of emphasizing and supporting the drama of the stories being told. The resulting arrangements are overwhelmingly beautiful, bringing in the orchestral grandeur of violin, cello, clarinets, horn, and double bass to add tremendous warmth and color to the recordings. Rarely does symphonic instrumentation find itself paired with the intimacy of Portastudio tape hiss and the physicality of close-mic’d acoustic guitar, but the result adds an amazingly emotional depth to Cathcart’s songs, and truly pushes the limits of home-recorded music. Along with the guest vocal contributions from Palberta’s Lily Konigsberg, Nina Ryser, and Anina Ivry-Block (whose albums Cathcart has engineered), the essence of friendship and collaboration is evident in ‘Bag of Holding,’ adding to the album’s unique character and special personality.

Lyrically, Cathcart assumes the role of storyteller across the album’s nine tracks, creating a series of vignettes with strong literary and cinematic sentiments and influences (sci-fi novels, Dungeons and Dragons, traveling and imagination). The lyrics are often journalistic in their candid observations on modern living, utilizing the classic foundation of guitar and voice to express thoughts and feelings on topics like romance, anxieties, nostalgia, existentialism, people, places, time, space, and our role in the universe. In this sense, Cathcart’s lyrical sentiments are reflections of the chaotic present day “anything goes” age we live in, with critical sarcasm, technological references, casual profanity, and a do-it-yourself ethos associated with the modern underground. While the accompanying music is undeniably beautiful and serene, the lyrical sentiment can be contemptuous and misanthropic - a classic juxtaposition that harks back to downtown folk and American roots music.

In ‘Bag of Holding,’ the edgier, sonically experimental details of The Cradle’s previous work have been stripped back, revealing the beautifully powerful songwriting that lies at its core. When combined with Weissberg’s decadent arrangements, the resulting work takes on a new life and places Cathcart’s songs in a fresh context, one that is atypical of the modern American underground sound with which his work is often associated. This is a record that feels like home; one can imagine themselves gazing out their window or sitting on their stoop envisioning fantastical alternative realities, or simply just contemplating the world around them and how it feels to experience life through one’s own personal lens.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0677/9256/8543/files/NNA114-digital-border-web-e1647031679381.jpg?v=1714759930
tredici-bacci-la-fine-del-futuro
Tredici Bacci - La Fine Del Futuro

NNA Tapes is ecstatic to present ‘La Fine Del Futuro,’ the brand new full-length album from the dynamic orchestral pop ensemble Tredici Bacci, directed by maniacal composer, arranger, musician and bandleader Simon Hanes. Songs like “In The 1970s,” “Barbarians,” and “Felicity Grows” showcase a powerful new Bacharach-fueled direction, with classic pop essences that would fit comfortably on the hi-fi, the stage, or the silver screen. Instrumental suites such as “Titoli Di Testa,” “Minimalissimo,” and “Ambulette” radiate with cinematic brilliance, each brimming with vibrant horns, playful organ, and illustrious strings that create a tremendous depth of sound - from the lush, tender moments up through the driving, “amped up Fellini” tempos that have become Tredici Bacci’s staple. The spirit of collaboration lives on through tracks like “Emmanuelle,” a deranged, gun-slinging take on a yuletide classic featuring JG Thirlwell, as well as on Hanes’ arrangement of “The Cavalry,” the lead single from Ryan Power’s recent NNA masterwork ‘They Sell Doomsday,’ with Power himself on vocal duties, accompanied by Sami Stevens’ gorgeous harmonies.

It is often times hard to comprehend the dizzying orchestrations that Hanes is able to concoct for such a massive band - 20 pieces on this album to be exact - the biggest incarnation of the band yet. However, Tredici Bacci pulls it off with grace and finesse, with Hanes’ arranging and composing talents capturing moods, cinematic nostalgia, and stylistic execution that few composers his age are able to pull off. To think that an eccentric millennial can produce such a diverse and intricate body of work is impressive, and frankly, out of the norm. Tredici Bacci are not afraid to be playful and embrace humor, a trait that makes them unique in the oh-so-serious corridors of classical music, and feels particularly important in a time where image, attitude, and trend often seem to take importance over quality in today’s mainstream. It can be said with utmost confidence that there is no band active today that sounds quite like Tredici Bacci - a feat in itself during an age where all of music history is instantly accessible, and technologically employable by the electronically-inclined masses. The band proudly wears their influences on their sleeves as they continue to comb through music’s past in search of ideas and inspirations, but at the same time always looking forward - growing, learning, and adding new flavor to their personalized approach. These new songs continue to showcase Cathcart’s comfort and ingenuity not only in traditional songwriting, but behind the boards as well, by demonstrating his chops in the editing and mixing process. The majority of sounds on ‘The Glare Of Success’ are taken from friend and collaborator Sammy Weissberg’s acoustic instrumental arrangements (violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute, double bass and horns), as well as the isolated vocal contributions from Palberta (Ani Ivry-Block, Lily Konigsberg, and Nina Ryser), manipulated and recontextualized by Cathcart through a unique form of musical recycling.

Some songs, such as “Day’s End Dub,” retain the pop song structure of The Cradle’s previous work, with the addition of all new vocals and lyrics placed into fresh musical settings. Other songs, such as “Dub Of Holding,” are entirely instrumental, inserting traditional reggae instrumentation such as hi-hats, melodica, kalimba, bells, percussion, and thick electric bass lines. The sound fidelity itself feels genuinely analog and organically hand-played, linking it further to the dub tradition, the influence this album wears on its sleeve. ‘The Glare Of Success’ emphasizes, in equal parts, Cathcart’s musical versatility, limitless imagination, and the tremendous depth of his influences and inspirations. Each new work from The Cradle reveals itself as another piece of a much larger story, and is a shining example of the freedom that Cathcart possesses in the creation of his art.

Recorded Fall 2017 at 107 St. James Place, BK, NY.
Samples culled mostly from the Weissberg-arranged instrumental and Palberta-vocal contributions to the Bag of Holding album by Ani, Lily, Nina, Jasper, Kana, Jake, Sammy, and Nathan.

Flood Dream by LEYA
Framed within a network of outlying artists whose experiments sketch out far-flung deviations from aboveground movements, the work of New York-based duo LEYA stands out as an anomaly that exemplifies the idiosyncratic impulses of the avant fringe. Pluperfect Mind also chronicles aspects of Izzy’s own transgender experience, from the painful tedium of waiting for hormone treatment, to the elation of finally inhabiting a body that feels right. It captures the sense of being cast adrift between an uncomfortable past and an uncertain future, living outside of heteronormativity and caught in “queer time”. Pluperfect Mind builds towards a seraphic finale in the title track, in which a beatific choral tapestry emerges from a sea of whispers and sighs and is finally consumed in a cloud of ecstatic, smouldering drone.

Having grown up singing in church choirs and listening to classical music, those influences can still be heard in Izzy’s music now. During her transition, having to make the shift from baritone to alto, she was captivated and inspired by the expressive intensity of Kate Bush, Vashti Bunyan and FKA twigs; her own clear, keening vocals soar throughout Pluperfect Mind, breathy and otherworldly. Through layers of gorgeous, yearning cello, pulsating electronics, and hyperreal field recordings, MIZU evokes a sense of depth by interrogating systems and exploring unknown territories both physical and cerebral. By way of its daring experimentalism, ‘Forest Scenes’ is patently modern and brilliantly ontological.

Proceeding from Robert Schumann’s ‘Waldszenen’ in name and, to some extent, concept, MIZU began work on ‘Forest Scenes’ immediately after completing ‘Distant Intervals’, conceiving and writing the record over the course of two inspired weeks in São Paulo, Brazil in Summer 2022 and completing it over the following year in New York. While ‘Distant Intervals’ engaged and inverted the classical idioms in which MIZU was reared, ‘Forest Scenes’ lunges even further away from that world. It is in no small way an acknowledgment of transcendent experiences and the thrills of self-discovery, whether in the vast urbanity of São Paulo, in the community among New York City’s queer spaces and dancefloors, or in the more abstract place of a self in transition. Pulling from these energies, MIZU loops in techno producer Concrete Husband, who features on “prphtbrd”, to further ornament the dancefloor flirtations.

While MIZU was socially transitioning during the creation of ‘Distant Intervals’, she began a physical gender transition in step with the inception of ‘Forest Scenes’. The record parallels this transformation, interrogating the boundaries between the forest and what is before / beyond it, building scenes of self-discovery through a kind of ecstasy in the unexplored. The forest is, at least in part, a metaphor for queer spaces, for spaces of self-discovery through community, through encounter. But the spaces of self-discovery, for MIZU, are also very much found within the songs themselves. This marvelous symbolic complexity holds Forest Scenes aloft, above mundane considerations of what is more or less beautiful. What is pastoral, what is modern, what is natural: all these considerations are teased out by MIZU’s compelling production, as she weaves electronic and environmental sounds, and cello both heavily processed and laid bare in a glorious, sweeping dream. But with the headlong dives into deconstructionist experimentation and the pathos, vulnerability, and staggering range of densities through a single instrumental body, MIZU asserts that ‘Forest Scenes’ could not be more her own, as she discovers herself within it.

Notes by Mark Trecka

Releases March 22, 2024

Color-in-color Light Pink & Red Vinyl. It comes on the heels of a relentless multi-year touring schedule, sandwiched amidst new collaborations with fashion houses, filmmakers, choreographers, and more, a blooming of their beguiling, potentially existent-in-any-context din into newer identities and spaces.

Since that period, LEYA (harpist Marilu Donovan and vocalist/violinist Adam Markiewicz) have sought to return to their basics - detuned harp, hazy strings, and wide-ranging, operatic vocals, all channeled through an unmistakably raw lens - and now begin to reimagine their language, harnessing production experiments that have been percolating in their tangential work in recent years.

I Forget Everything is LEYA’s first solo work with elements of electronic production, albeit nascent, ranging in sheen from home-recorded to high-fidelity, all generated solely from harp, strings, and voice. From the opener, “Eden of Haze,” there is a billowing (literal) hiss of energy that creeps in and remains present. Climbing, almost exaltant-sounding strings are resampled, overlapped and crushed back together, segueing into a troubled-feeling pagan folk song, then falling back into a dissonant, climbing wall of violins, beneath which more resonant chords slowly emerge as the first resampled strings play again until the track abruptly ends. “Corners,” which follows, finds LEYA inhabiting a larger, more luxurious sound, suggestive of something more cinematic, but still characteristically raw. A gothic, Glass-ian pop song, it feels like one they might have written for someone else to sing in the past, but now Markiewicz inhabits the central role. Throughout the release, his words are more audible than in previous records, inching closer to context, but still feel within the elusive slipstream that begets the everythingness of LEYA’s work.

“Baited,” the fourth song, marks the newest approach on the record. Missing is any live harp, but rather just a short looping sample of the decaying harp chord from the previous song, “Weaving.” This suggestion of Twin-Peaks-meets-Basinski feeling minimalism sounds like a wash between two close chords, panning with a restricted-feeling elasticity, along with periodic but not-quite-metric clicks and hisses. Markiewicz sings quietly and nakedly atop the track, “Walk like heaven but walk like heat.”

While some songs hark back to LEYA’s central, historical sound, they also see new deviations. “Weaving” harnesses the merged violin/vocal homophony that is characteristic of much of their work, but layered voices and harmonies scale to something wider-feeling, with bubbling strings emerging at the end to form an orchestral wash as a subdued chorus sings beneath. “Fake” is underscored by feathered, pulsing, subdued-yet-chaotic synth reverberations hidden beneath the harp that seem to react to its tones. “Mia” explores an increasingly processed orchestral environment: drifting strings and voices gently warp, decay, and bubble up again.

I Forget Everything regards a haven scorned. It is a reaction to the inevitability of loss. There is a haven some of us might collectively choose to abandon, an indifference to underestimating violence. Or, conversely, it can regard the necessity of loss and even abandonment. In a small, private world, once imagined and then realized, or stumbled upon with indifference, there is the imminent ebb of movement, and the distortion of memory.
