All six musicians are in-demand collaborators in New York’s musical community and work with a wide array of artists, from pop superstars like Beyoncé to critically lauded independent musicians like Will Sheff (Okkervil River) and Amanda Palmer (Dresden Dolls), as well as with respected figures of the avant-garde like Fred Frith and Ran Blake.

It's been a few years since the New Yorker labeled Cuddle Magic’s music "high concept chamber-pop.” At the time, that was a fair statement about a band known to utilize 12-tone rows, odd meters, and extended techniques; a band which had collaborated with new music pianist Phyllis Chen and Third Stream master Ran Blake. But with Ashes/Axis, the band’s forthcoming new full-length record, listeners are less likely to hear echoes of the academy. All sorts of heady compositional devices, both musical and literary, are still present, but the members of Cuddle Magic have learned to bury those influences deeper in the substrate of the music.

Ashes/Axis features songs written by three of Cuddle Magic’s band members–Christopher McDonald, Benjamin Lazar Davis and Alec Spiegelman–all of whom take turns as lead vocalist. In addition, Kristin Slipp, whose voice is prominent from the very start of the album, takes the lead on “Slow Rider,” “The First Hippie on the Moon, Pt. II” and “Voicemail.”

The album also features several co-writes: “The First Hippie on the Moon, Pt. II” was co-written by Lazar Davis and his brother Tim Davis; “The First Hippie on the Moon, Pt. I” was co-written by McDonald and Davis; “Voicemail” was co-written by Lazar Davis and Spiegelman; “Spinning” and “Round And Round” were co-written by Lazar Davis and Sarah K. Pedinotti of Lip Talk, and three of the songs on the album were co-written by Lazar Davis and longtime collaborator Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive. Those tracks, “Slow Rider,” “Trojan Horse,” and “Getaway,” are all pop songs hung over the frame of Bawa music from Northwestern Ghana. Parts of these songs were conceived just for the gyl, a type of wooden xylophone, and can be heard translated for this sort-of-rock band.

As with past Cuddle Magic records, the studio process for Ashes/Axis began with live full-band arrangements. Grooves were orchestrated with a set of unusual electro-acoustic timbres including a finger-picked, overdriven acoustic guitar, a bass clarinet with a cheap microphone nested in the bell, junk-shop percussion run through a vocoder, and a slew of Casio keyboards (bought, urgently, from an unnervingly tense family in rural Maine). After tracking the arrangements, several elements were then removed to allow for one final stage of recomposition. With Cuddle Magic’s Benjamin Lazar Davis at the helm, Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Swans, Antony & The Johnsons) and assistant engineer Adam Sachs chopped, distorted, distressed, and delayed elements in each song. The end result is a sound that is warm and precise, raw yet sophisticated–a set of infectious pop songs from either an alternate reality or a paradoxically familiar near-future.

Bumblin' Creed by Padang Food Tigers & Sigbjørn Apeland

Between them, British folk phantasms Padang Food Tigers (Stephen Lewis and Spencer Grady) and Norwegian harmonium player Sigbjørn Apeland have recorded for illustrious imprints such as ECM, Hubro, Bathetic, Scissor Tail and Blackest Rainbow. These past offerings are engrained with a rich devotion to various branches of traditional composition – church music, country and folk – yet seek to dissemble those well-worn forms under the aegis of extemporisation. Both parties are collating a formidable canon of après organic ambient, venturing beyond the all-prevailing placebos tailored by so many sleep-starved somnambulists. In theory it can get pretty Cageian, in reality the academy never gets a look in. The nine pieces on this highly-emotive suite – each built up from an embryonic kernel ceded by Apeland or the Tigers and developed in cherished association – seduces the space between every well-judged note, while hanging on their ebbing word. And I quickly grew to love film music scores – and the way they can comment on and enhance the experience of viewing a classic film. A good film theme can stick in your mind indelibly, like the best pop songs. I thank my mom and dad for instilling my love of film music – popular soundtrack LPs of the day were played continuously on our hi-fi, which is where I first fell under the spell of Victor Young’s “Around the World in 80 Days,” Michel Legrand’s “Umbrellas of Cherbourg” music and Frances Lai’s score for “A Man and a Woman” (the last two both ear-marked for “Cinefantastique Vol. 2”). Gottschalk was selecting paintings and writing text for a book of Landis’ paintings and the two begin imagining a soundtrack for the book. The obvious choice would be Connors, a painter himself, and Langille, an admirer of Landis’ work. The more they talked about it, the more plausible it seemed. It convenes with the ghosts of the past while marching relentlessly forwards.

Drawn from experiences as far-flung as riding a train from San Francisco to Chicago with an old-style, rootin'-tootin' cowboy for company (“Cowboy Song”), to experiencing the intense natural beauty of Icelandic waterfalls (“Dettifoss”), it’s a record that taps into the musical traditions of the past while being a collection of songs about living in the moment.

Raised by pioneering parents on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, NYC, Odetta’s milieu was a “colorful culture of artistry,” that included early exposure to community activism, renegade film screenings, poetry readings and trips to CBGB's. Inchoate punk and hip hop were aural wallpaper, as were the 45s spinning in the household jukebox featuring her dad’s extensive collection of soul and afrobeat records, as well as her Appalachian mother’s classic country selections. A classically trained violinist with a penchant for back-porch banjo, Odetta combines these variegated sounds of her childhood with her personal passion for folk music and the musicological legacy of Alan Lomax.

Lomax is writ large on Old Rockhounds... at least in spirit anyway. Odetta plays all the instruments on this and her debut 222, which made problematic the changeovers between songs when playing live. Field recordings the singer had collected on her travels were utilized to make such transitions seamless, and so successful was that intermingling of songs and soundscapes that they’ve transitioned into the recording process. It makes for a strangely intimate listen: tingly and a little tipsy: an album for twilight, sitting within the nocturnal hinterland between dusk and somnambulance - candlelit and confidential - a time for stories and secrets.

So far, so old skool. And yet, Old Rockhounds Never Die also embraces modernity without ever sounding incongruous. The mix of manipulated 21st century beats and the musical traditions of centuries meet at a crossroads and consummate their curiosity without inhibition. It’ll probably not surprise anyone listening to the album then that its a co-production. Odetta writes and performs all the songs while her partner Jack Inslee is in the background bringing the digital dark arts. Experimenting with found sounds & foley, the two have developed a sonic vernacular built around playing around with a-typical instruments. Hartman explains: “Many of the beats on the album were recorded in the kitchen: the snare sound is actually a running faucet, or if you hear these glockenspiel bells that's actually a set of kitchen bowls. Other percussive elements include scissors, a pepper grinder and keys on the radiator.”

Hartman was performing in a 10-piece band when she met Jack, who then challenged her to strip everything back and explore her own singular talent. The first fruits of this experiment were borne on the aforementioned, critically acclaimed 222. In 2015, Stereogum said: “Her impulse to mix elements of folk, bluegrass, and Americana with experimental or warped psychedelia is bridged by her strength as a lyricist, and the strength of the record’s producer Jack Inslee.” Old Rockhounds... takes the blueprint and improves upon it, with songs yet more vivid, sensual and cinematic. “Widow’s Peak” in particular is peak Hartman, a spooky tale that came to her like a bolt of lightning one day. It’s a gorgeous lullaby that builds stealthily, then - like a levee of violins rather than water - it bursts forth. That special moment was actually originally a mistake in the studio.

“It was a happy accident,” says Odetta. “We played back all of the test takes together by mistake and fell in love with the wall of sound. I love mistakes in songwriting or recording, because they so often lead to something greater.” The title track, meanwhile, came as a moment of inspiration that seemed to also come from another place. If the singer was the vessel, then luckily Jack was on hand with the tape rolling. Odetta explains:

“Jack and I were working on something else; it was pretty late at night, a couple of whiskey's in, and I was strumming this shitty backpacker guitar. Thankfully Jack ran the tape, because that track is completely improvised; it just came off the bat. You can even hear me laughing at the end! I think the melody is really catchy and I was doing something with my voice that I'd never done before - kind of jumping up the octave in that old country yodelling style.

“I re-tracked with a real guitar, wrote different lyrics that were a little more clever, but ultimately you just lose the magic when you try to recreate something so raw like that. We’ll never know, but we’re now a step closer thanks to Ghost Box, the debut album by SUSS, an NYC quintet whose members have worked in various capacities with Lydia Lunch, the B-52s, Rubber Rodeo, k.d. Lang, David Bowie, John Cale, Ed Sheeran, Wilco, Norah Jones, The War On Drugs, Burt Bacharach, and countless others. More than a literal reconstruction of an imagined collaboration between Eno and Morricone, Ghost Box opens a door onto a world where ambient music and country-western make for natural bedfellows.

That world, as it turns out, is the one we already live in -- it just took someone to make the connection. For Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist and cowpunk pioneer Bob Holmes, that connection has been hiding in plain sight for decades. The catalyst behind SUSS, Holmes views electronic acts like Boards of Canada and shoegaze icons like My Bloody Valentine as more recent avatars of the “high lonesome” vibe that we tend to think of strictly in terms of traditional roots music. In that light, you can trace the melancholic sprawl of classic titles by both of those acts back to Hank Williams. Looking at that lineage in reverse then begs the question: What is twang, anyway, if not a form of ambiance?

Ghost Box, then, embodies “ambient country music” not as a gag or a novelty or even a postmodern recontextualization, but instead as the organic offspring of forms that, in a sense, were already conjoined. One of the album’s charms, though, is that the rest of SUSS didn’t necessarily see it that way. So it required quite a bit of exploration as a group -- Holmes on mandolin and guitar, guitarist/keyboardist Pat Irwin, pedal steel player Jonathan Gregg, synth looper/visual artist (and New Yorker/New York Times illustrator) Gary Leib, and William Garrett, architect of the “high lonesome” quality in the album’s mixing stage -- to arrive at a blend that felt natural.

"In the past,” says Holmes, “Gary and I were well known as the guys who mashed-up Dolly Parton and Devo -- but you could see the stitches. This time, we wanted to make music where you couldn't see the stitches.”

The goal, in a nutshell, was to create ambient music using (mostly) traditional instruments -- a kind of reverse-engineering of Holmes’ longstanding conviction that electronic music is today’s folk expression. Ostensibly, Ghost Box achieves what Holmes was aiming for, but it also accomplishes much more. As tumbleweeds continue to blow across the screen of modern musical fashion, artists appear to yearn for the mythical America of yore as if they could somehow get there by re-creating vintage sounds.

Today, we’re practically inundated with music that evokes the hills of Appalachia, the never-ending Western sky, the hallowed halls of the Grand Ole Opry, and so on. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between reverence for these cultural artifacts and a fascination with them as kitsch. In both cases, the resulting music can exude the fragrance of social archeology. Ghost Box echoes from a more genuinely inviting musical landscape where the cowboy-hatted Brooklynite and the native Kentuckian are no longer confined to their respective stereotypes as tourist and tourist attraction.

Whatever your frame of reference, wherever you stand when it comes to notions of “authenticity,” Ghost Box will transport you, as Irwin puts it, to “other places.” Irwin, who shares Holmes’ love of Brian Eno but “wasn’t totally familiar with” the ambient country direction Holmes wanted to pursue, sums up one of the album’s most enticing qualities when he admits that “we don’t even know where those places are.”

The course this band is charting, he notes, “is something we’re discovering as we go along.”

Future Phase by PC Worship

Future Phase is a collection of new music recorded throughout 2018 by Justin Frye, with contributions from Jess Paps and Mike Etten. The English title is 'No More Blues', totally shortchanging the original, so I wanted to sing it in Portuguese, as I’ve always known the song. On her debut album, The Joys of Forgetting, Allegra Krieger embraces the idea of forgetting as relief.

Growing up in suburban Florida, Krieger was raised staunchly Catholic. Much of her childhood was spent in a church, where she also studied classical piano and sang in the choir. Although she was encouraged to pursue a consecrated life, she chose a different path, dissociating from religion. The following years brought continual transitions of personhood and place. From housekeeping at a Death Valley motel, to tree-planting in Georgia, she explored different sides of herself, chasing ideals yet avoiding certain truths. As she reckoned with her own malleability, she came to understand the value of leaving something behind. The solitude and disenchantment that accompanied this lifestyle gave way to introspection, yielding the songs that became the Joys of Forgetting.

Like memory itself, Krieger’s personal growth ebbs and flows across The Joys of Forgetting. She makes for an inviting companion as she connects the nonlinear dots on her journey. She lays her feelings and desires plain as she unfolds them: to find someone to confide in, to talk on the telephone, to catch up with a friend. She learns to seek comfort in patience, finding that affection is easy, but loving takes time. Her arrangements are elegant and unobtrusive, skirting her crystalline voice with acoustic guitar, curling strings, and percussion that gently tumbles. Having cut his teeth in numerous bands such as Pygmy Shrews, Zs, and most recently with The Men, Greenberg has been fostering and cultivating his own unique reexamination of the the guitar as an instrument, resulting in a minimalist and truly psychedelic whirlwind of notes, first displayed on his debut release “Hubble Linger” on NNA in 2011. Since then, the Hubble sound has matured and expanded, taking in new ideas and influences while still retaining the rock and roll hypnotism of it’s “one man and his guitar” rawness. On “Hubble Eagle” we hear Greenberg launching his guitar mantra even further into uncharted territory. Opening with the side-long “A Star Or Two Beside”, Hubble trades in his trusted electric and opts for acoustic guitar, which when subjected to Greenberg’s turbulent tapping chops, yields incredible and unexpected sonic results. Complex percussive patterns begin to emerge, creating a raw rhythmic backbone for a constantly shifting vortex of overtones and harmonic weavings. These dulcimer-like pluckings ping-pong back and forth across a vast stereo field, creating a whirlwind effect that sweeps over the listener like river rapids; bubbling, rushing, chaotic, and endlessly flowing. After some immersion, the barrage of notes can start to feel automated or even electronic, until brief pauses and subtle flourishes break the hypnotic spell, reminding the listener of the human nature of this music. Side B opens with the breaking of more new ground on the track “A Long Way From Home” originally by The Kinks, Hubble’s first cover song. Inspired by Greenberg’s rigorous touring schedule on the open road, Hubble meditates on the feelings of isolation and melancholy set forth in the original song. By deconstructing the riffs and rebuilding them in the Hubble framework, the track turns into an electro-acoustic hybrid that is entirely new in sound, employing alternate tunings and adding vocals for the first time in the project’s history. The result opens new harmonic gateways for the notes to flow through a psych-rock atmosphere. Closing off with the title track “Hubble Eagle”, Hubble is in it’s truest form with a powerful electric guitar exercise. The playing is mechanical in its relentless repetition, creating guitar fractals that seem to crystallize around themselves like the formation of a galaxy. Rock riffs are contemplated, exposed, and ripped to shreds by Greenberg’s signature three-finger tapping technique, drawing upon raw bluesy or even gritty Americana-like tonality. The sound becomes so full-spectrum that it creates audio hallucinations, causing one to hear perhaps organ, voice, or synth… before breaking back into the reality that it is has been the sound of solo guitar all along. Greenberg successfully reminds us of the importance of hand-played music and the human touch in a time when electronics and circuitry along seem to prevail. Enhanced by the record’s flow from acoustic into electric sound, the result of “Hubble Eagle” is a truly unique modern guitar album.

Mastered and cut by Lupo at Calyx Mastering in Berlin, Germany.

Comes with free mp3 download coupon.

'The Holy Life That’s Coming' by Chris Weisman
NNA is happy to set off the new year with the latest full-length record by veteran songwriter Chris Weisman. A long-time resident of the creatively fertile valleys of Brattleboro, Vermont, “The Holy Life That’s Coming” is the newest addition to his vast, accomplished discography that includes numerous full-lengths, limited cassette editions, collaborations, and conceptually ambitious releases (the 2012 88-song YouTube release “Maya Properties”, for example). However prolific, Weisman remains somewhat of a cultural hermit, remaining quietly tucked away on his throne in the hills of “Beatleboro”, giving very scant live performances or appearances, and little public insight into his music and creative world. Weisman instead remains a reclusive gardener diligently tending his artistic crops. Fortunately, we as listeners are given rewarding musical offerings in the form of his unique and personal recordings that serve as documents of the creative process, and as insight into Chris’ observations on the world around him. Militantly adhering to a limited palette, his recordings are all captured and constructed on a four-track cassette recorder, lending to the intimate, homegrown quality of the songs contained within.

In the case of “The Holy Life…” in particular, the instrumentation is limited to steel string guitar and voice, with the occasional subtle keyboard accompaniment. These rudimentary tools are a deceptively conventional songwriting setting for content so melodically, harmonically, and lyrically unconventional as Weisman’s songs. His personal brand opts for a more twisting, shifting journey, a chordal harmonic exploration that often keeps the listener on their toes and guessing what will come next. Perhaps born out of his studies in jazz and music theory, Weisman’s style thrives on the juxtaposition of withholding traditional melodic progressions, but at the same time, the glowing, distant ember of Lennon/McCartney influence is never too distant. Despite these structural complexities, the core of Weisman’s songwriting remains deceptively simple: a process of surrendering to a universal flow and “letting things happen”, embracing the results and allowing ideas to take shape on their own. The outcome is reliably delicate and gentle, creating worlds in song that are heartfelt and vivid. This is the case for “The Holy Life That’s Coming”, perhaps his most welcoming record yet.

Seemingly influenced by the manic qualities of New England seasonal shifts, this LP comes across as the quintessential “winter” album, reflecting the state of psychosis that can develop when faced with the grey, unending bleakness of a Vermont winter (a familiar feeling for those of us who have endured the madness). There are a range of topics that are touched upon, stemming from observational thoughts about daily life and one’s surroundings. The mundanity of bathtubs and chimneys are met alongside feelings of dissociation and dissatisfaction with earthly reality and the human existence. A nostalgic longing for emotional connection, paired with a desire for the dissipation of the human self and a reintegration into the infinity of the cosmos. We also encounter a spiritual personification of objects in nature brought about by casual walks in the park, making observations on the backpack people around us, pondering concepts of birth and death, while entertaining the juxtaposition between cynicism and enlightenment. Other songs come across as Surrealist poems, traveling through hallucinatory dream worlds induced by the endless circles of time, or triggered by those chords that dad used to play on his guitar. Weisman succeeds in binding fragmented ideas together with universal human feelings, never intending to solve problems or answer questions, but simply exist inside them. “The Holy Life That’s Coming” is a record that rewards the listener with new discoveries upon each listen, a gratifying quality that is the signature of a musician who has succeeded in personal diligence to their craft, while endlessly staying true to oneself.

Dancing On Soda Lake by Wren Kitz
NNA Tapes is very pleased to present the latest full-length recording from Burlington, Vermont artist Wren Kitz. Following up his debut album “For Evelyn” back in 2015, “Dancing On Soda Lake” continues confidently in the unique and personal style of music that Wren has carved out for himself over the years. By blending traditional guitar-and-voice songwriting with field recording and tape collage experimentation, Kitz has developed a ghostly and contemplative form of musical expression all his own that breaks down walls between genre categorizations. Together with a newly-assembled band consisting of percussion and strings, “Dancing On Soda Lake” is Kitz’s most fully-realized and captivating effort to date.

With a recurring aqueous motif both lyrically and sonically, “Dancing On Soda Lake” captures this essence elegantly throughout the gentle impermanence of it’s luminous song cycle, flowing freely back and forth between beauty and mystery, not unlike our own plasmic origins. Wren’s sensitive vocal delivery drifts carefully between loose, rhythmic tempos and plucks of the guitar, punctuated by swells of percussion and heart-wrenching harmonies from the bass, cello, and violin. The oblique lyrics hint at a narrative, though never fully disclose their true intentions, utilizing abstractions in language to shroud meaning, the way that dusk envelops a landscape. Themes of confusion, isolation, and existentialism indicate that there is a distinct darkness buried in these songs… though it is not articulated through sonic aggression, but rather through mood by way of wistful melancholia and bittersweet recollection.

The most intriguing aspect of Kitz’s compositions is his ardent dedication to magnetic tape, unlocking its tangible and nostalgic qualities not only through recording, but through instrumental utilization as well. A dedicated field recorder, Wren’s travels with his tape recorder yield a trove of extracted sonic memories that he is able to access in his songs through manipulation and collage. Wren captures literal moments from his life and recontextualizes them as musical elements, building textures and atmospheres from a faded reality, from subtle rustlings to roaring oceanic vastness. This blending of fidelities creates a very dynamic listen by constructing a hypnagogic tension between traditional songwriting and avant-garde experimentation. Through Wren’s distinctive musical vision and his tasteful mastery of his materials, “Dancing On Soda Lake” manifests as an intimate yet mystifying album, like viewing a sparkling body of water through a distorted lens.

Cassette comes packaged with digital download coupon.

"It’s a gorgeous and discomfiting tribute to the frustrating limits of the physical form, while still able to recall the ethereal bitcrush of forgotten, secret worlds."–SPIN Magazine

“It’s an underwater dance that is portrayed in the album, made of muffled sounds and slow movings, leaving the listener as fluctuating in the still aquatic reservoir watching the sunlight filtering through the transparent substance."
–Guia Cortassa, Gold Flake Paint

“Dancing On Soda Lake, building off of the stylistic world he created with For Evelyn, is an initially approachable dream/soundscape that pays dividends in transcendent, previously hidden harmonies, newly perceptible bits of texture, and buried snippets of field recordings revealing more of themselves with each repeat play.”
–Elisabeth Fuchsia, POST-TRASH

'EVRLY MVSIC' by Patrick Higgins & Josh Modney
We’re very proud to have the innovative composer and performer Patrick Higgins return to NNA Tapes, this time in a duo format with acclaimed violinist Josh Modney. On 2015’s ‘Social Death Mixtape,’ we witnessed Higgins’ talents as a composer, creating intricate electroacoustic compositions with a variety of performers. On ‘EVRLY MVSIC’ however, we hear Higgins as a skilled performer on his primary instrument, the guitar. Josh Modney comes from a similar background, having established himself as a prominent figure in New York City’s New Music circuit, with work ranging from the chamber music group International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), to composer-performer collective Wet Ink Ensemble. Having shared the stage together for the past 5 years both as improvisers and as chamber musicians, the foundation of ’EVRLY MVSIC’ is built on a long term musical connection between Modney and Higgins, a bond that is made evident throughout these recordings.

On ‘EVRLY MVSIC,’ the two performers have taken the concept of “Early Music” as a stimulus to inspire performances of acoustic improvisation that aim at a compositional tightness, creating a musical framework based more around the feeling, rather than the sound, of Medieval struggle. Tightly coiled around highly virtuosic and austere interactions, Higgins and Modney harness the essence of Early Music both in sentiment as well as gesture, using guitar and violin in unorthodox ways that sometimes recall the sounds of early stringed instruments such as the oud and viol. Each instrument inherently carries the capacity for both classical beauty and textural violence, both of which are employed with tasteful skill and execution. Improvisation in this project is neither free nor, strictly speaking, structured. Instead, it is aimed at an emergent form in the instant, looking toward song structure in the most novel and ancient sense. Noise and extended technique are used to create a lyrical aching quality, while melody is used to create unsettling noise.

Throughout the album, EVRLY MVSIC displays a linear progression of material, building over the course of three "Partitas.” The first two utilize an arcane, sparse musical language of plucked sounds strangely reminiscent of Renaissance lute music, advancing to a lushly harmonized set of microtonal, cantabile pieces that explore the full expressive range of violin and acoustic guitar. What furthermore adds to the uniqueness of this album, however, is the third Partita, which introduces electric guitar and real-time electronic processing on both instruments to culminate in an expansive, relentlessly energetic display of refreshing new sounds. The original acoustic palette of guitar and violin is retained, but vastly expanded upon, injecting a dense, unpredictable modern edge into the archaic atmosphere. ‘EVRLY MVSIC’ presents an incredibly original fusion between ancient European musical history and distinctly American experimentalism, hinged on the nexus between improvisation and chamber music, and fueled by a deeply personal musical alliance.

Bag of Holding by The Cradle
NNA is very proud to present new music from The Cradle, the artistic alias of New York City-based musician Paco Cathcart. His latest album ‘Bag Of Holding’ presents a more serene version of Cathcart’s guitar-and-voice based songwriting, integrating orchestral arrangements, spirited collaboration, and brilliant production techniques to give way to The Cradle’s most singular and focused work to date. In addition to working as a recording engineer focusing on analog mediums, Cathcart has honed his craft over the years as a member of bands such as Big Neck Police, Shimmer and Climax Landers, all the while prolifically crafting nearly 30 personal solo albums and experiments across various labels and self-releases. ‘Bag Of Holding’ takes all of these experiences and uses them thoughtfully to build a masterful, proper full-length album of highly personal and expressive orchestral pop compositions.

What makes ‘Bag of Holding’ shine are its incredibly vivid and stunning instrumental arrangements. Sammy Weissberg, a longtime friend and musical partner of Cathcart, wrote and arranged the bulk of the non-guitar music on the album, with the intent of emphasizing and supporting the drama of the stories being told. The resulting arrangements are overwhelmingly beautiful, bringing in the orchestral grandeur of violin, cello, clarinets, horn, and double bass to add tremendous warmth and color to the recordings. Rarely does symphonic instrumentation find itself paired with the intimacy of Portastudio tape hiss and the physicality of close-mic’d acoustic guitar, but the result adds an amazingly emotional depth to Cathcart’s songs, and truly pushes the limits of home-recorded music. Along with the guest vocal contributions from Palberta’s Lily Konigsberg, Nina Ryser, and Anina Ivry-Block (whose albums Cathcart has engineered), the essence of friendship and collaboration is evident in ‘Bag of Holding,’ adding to the album’s unique character and special personality.

Lyrically, Cathcart assumes the role of storyteller across the album’s nine tracks, creating a series of vignettes with strong literary and cinematic sentiments and influences (sci-fi novels, Dungeons and Dragons, traveling and imagination). The lyrics are often journalistic in their candid observations on modern living, utilizing the classic foundation of guitar and voice to express thoughts and feelings on topics like romance, anxieties, nostalgia, existentialism, people, places, time, space, and our role in the universe. In this sense, Cathcart’s lyrical sentiments are reflections of the chaotic present day “anything goes” age we live in, with critical sarcasm, technological references, casual profanity, and a do-it-yourself ethos associated with the modern underground. While the accompanying music is undeniably beautiful and serene, the lyrical sentiment can be contemptuous and misanthropic - a classic juxtaposition that harks back to downtown folk and American roots music.

In ‘Bag of Holding,’ the edgier, sonically experimental details of The Cradle’s previous work have been stripped back, revealing the beautifully powerful songwriting that lies at its core. When combined with Weissberg’s decadent arrangements, the resulting work takes on a new life and places Cathcart’s songs in a fresh context, one that is atypical of the modern American underground sound with which his work is often associated. This is a record that feels like home; one can imagine themselves gazing out their window or sitting on their stoop envisioning fantastical alternative realities, or simply just contemplating the world around them and how it feels to experience life through one’s own personal lens.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0677/9256/8543/files/NNA114-digital-border-web-e1647031679381.jpg?v=1714759930
bendrix-littleton
Bendrix Littleton - Deep Dark South
Deep Dark South by Bendrix Littleton
Bendrix Littleton is the writing and recording project of Nashville-via-Dallas musician Bennett Littlejohn. A lot of rich, burnt-out musicians affectedly claim that there are ‘songs in guitars’ to justify their ever-growing guitar collections, but I do feel there is an ounce of truth in this. But while conveying the power of natural forces, it also embraces occasional warm rays of hope and humanity.

“For once, it looked like the stark, vast landscapes that we had been painting before were starting to be populated with a bit of creature warmth,” says Bob Holmes (mandolin, guitar, harmonica, violin). But, he adds, “this is not Garden of Eden kind of stuff.” Pat Irwin (electric guitar, resonator guitar, keyboards) adds, “I think of the fragility of the world around us. I think of the humanity, and the lack of it. The world seems out of balance. There are birds and there are beasts.”

Birds & Beasts follows on the heels of SUSS’ acclaimed 2022 self- titled double album, cited by Pitchfork as “music that dilates the world to a high-lonesome point, a pastoral quintessence that doesn’t change so much as it gradually opens and closes, telescopes and recedes.” As in the past, the band combines ambient synths, loops and found sounds with more traditional Americana instrumentation to create what Aquarium Drunkard describes as “country music, mutated and stretched along a vast horizon — open music for open souls.”

But if the horizons here are deeper — more Gulf Stream than Grand Canyon — in the primordial pull of tracks like “Birds” and “Prey,” which imply both natural and societal disquiet, Birds & Beasts offers the freedom of celestial and terrestrial peregrinations in “Flight,” “Overstory” and “Migration.” Taking a cue from the 30-minute collaboration Rising that SUSS recently released with Australian banjoist Andrew Tuttle, the tracks on Birds & Beasts are generally longer, with fewer elements and a greater sense of space.

As always, the band’s discovery of new horizons evolved organically. When it comes to defining the next step in their journey, “the music is the articulation,” says pedal steel guitarist Jonathan Gregg. “We’re not sure where we’re going, but we know when we’ve arrived, and it’s never the same place twice.”

Indeed, some tracks simply take longer to find their way than others. “Migration,” for example, dates from the early days of the band and is the album’s sole track to feature the late Gary Leib, who passed away suddenly in 2021. “We always loved the track but we never found the right fit for it,” says Holmes. "However, as we were making what was to become Birds & Beasts, it became obvious that the track was just waiting for us to come around to its way of thinking. You just need to listen to the music closely to hear what it’s always been trying to tell you.”

Join SUSS on their journey as they keep their ear to the ground on Birds & Beasts, on Northern Spy Records.
Releases June 28, 2024.

To the Hour by MJ Guider
“‘To the Hour’ is a track inspired and formed in part by some unexpected sounds heard during a mandatory pause on a busy day to do some life admin.
